This is a block from my best friend's house whose been caving with me many
times. He was out talking to some of the initial "explorers" and they
mentioned that the speleothems were lying on the ground in the cave, I
guess broken during the sinkhole collapse. (Who knows if that's true or
not?) Too bad the cave doesn't run under HIS house!

2018-02-09 Thread Justin Shaw
I’ll qualify my quip about the quality of this map to say that given it was
produced the same day as the survey, it’s perhaps no better than I, or most,
could produce so quickly. It’s just that as a caver I’m used to seeing higher
quality maps, and indeed did chuckle at the wording of the standard P.G. stamp
when viewed on such a basic map. Also, a profile and a few cross sections, of
matching simplicity, wouldn’t have taken that long to include but would have
added greatly to the amount of information conveyed by the map. I might have
been overly harsh, but still smh.

Re: [Texascavers] New Cave in Brushy Creek area?

2018-02-09 Thread Geary Schindel
Interesting story,

I saw that Kimble White works for Cambrain Environmental Services so he is
working with the utility.

Having worked a lot of sinkhole collapse issues up in Tennessee and Kentucky,
it would seem that the utilities ran over a cave entrance which was not
stabilized. Movement of the fill created a crack in the water line which ran
water into the cave – basically power washing the fill into the cave which
resulted in the collapse. Sort of the same mechanism that forms sinkholes near
cracks in storm and sanitary sewer lines in non karst areas.

Then again, this like auditing someone’s finances over the phone. Kind of hard
to do without looking at it closely. Maybe Kimble will have more information.

It can be repaired if they know what they are doing. Otherwise, it will result
in continued collapse at the site.
