At one time, not too long ago, this group had a welcome note which said that unlike other groups in which a user was expected to wade through all the earlier messages before asking a question this group did not expect the user to this. In practice too, a newbie was not made to feel, either directly or indirectly, that he needs to do full homework before daring to pose a question. Is this still the motto? I cannot see the earlier welcome message anywhere these days.
