It's confusing but Tiddlyspot is not a server side implementation.
It's uses UploadPlugin. If you want to use this on your own site it's not
too hard (if you can handle installing and configure a php script).

I looked at TiddlySpot, but didn't sign up there as I am trying to set
this up on my own server. Is there a way I missed to see a sample of a
TiddlySpot-enabled wiki without signing up? (Or maybe I should just
sign up for a free account to try it out.)

Tiddlyspot is very easy to set up and break down so go for it.
I believe the way tiddlyspot works has been documented and may be able to be
used by you.
