Re: [tw] Besies GTD and eBooks

2015-06-19 Thread Jed Carty
This turned into something much longer than I intended, but I think it is
relevant.

I am putting together an interactive resume/portfolio site using
TiddlyWiki. A complaint that I have always had with resumes is that it is
almost impossible to put all, or even most, of the relevant information
into one and have it readable. One of the things that I like so much about
TiddlyWiki is that it is one of the first tools that I have come across
that actually tries to use the new capabilities of a digital medium instead
of just translating older media into a digital format. Unfortunately
conveying that idea to people seems to be a very difficult task, even to
people who are familiar with technology. Even when working with other
graduate students doing novel research the prevailing attitude seems to be
that having a solution means that finding other solutions is pointless, and
when trying to improve something the only things to consider are along
already established metrics and ideas. A friend of mine who like to make
new things and uses TiddlyWiki classic a lot described it as 'a stack of
index cards with all the associated metadata', which is an incredibly
powerful and useful tool, but if you define tiddlywiki like that than you
are ignoring most of what it can do. While one of the biggest contributions
from tiddlywiki is its indexing ability its power comes from mixing that
indexing ability with the capabilities of a browser and javascript. Finding
new things that are possible with that mixture is where we will find the
most useful applications, not just using tiddlywiki as a tool that allows
us to do what we could already do in a better and more efficient manner.
Wikipedia is the example I generally use. It is a searchable and expandable
encyclopedia with good cross referencing and indexing, but the ideas it
uses aren't fundamentally different than a normal encyclopedia with a good
index. The goal of making an encyclopedia the best that it can be is very
useful, but if you frame the task like that than it is also very limiting.

That being said, using tiddlywiki to do existing tasks more efficiently is
a great use for it, and probably the fastest way to attract new users. I
just don't think that using it that way is where we will find the best
applications.

As a more immediate response, for my resume tiddlywiki I am putting in
everything relevant and tagging it appropriately so it can be automatically
sorted and indexed for easy navigation (that is if I can get a reasonable
interface for it). I think that we could make a resume builder edition that
guides you through a similar process and then since there is limited space
on a resume you can have checklists for each section you would like on your
resume where you pick the items most relevant for whatever job you are
using it for and have templates that automatically put together a
presentable resume tiddler that is automatically populated with correct
typesetting. Or generate LaTeX code if you want something fancier.

[tw] Re: [TWC] Date plugin and todays reminder link

Hello everyone,

sorry to bump this but, not being a coder, I'm confused with the code
of DatePlugin, http://www.tiddlytools.com/#DatePluginReminderMacros
http://remindermacros.tiddlyspot.com/ and CalendarPlugin,
where I guess lies the answer to my problem.

I guess what I'm looking for is some sort of inline script like

script

(if there is at least one reminder
set for today)

  return

@@color:#F00;date popup today 'DDD, MMM DDth ' 'DD MMM '
(number of reminders set for today)@@;

 else
  return (current date in the above format-no link;
/script

something like what the Calendar plugin does as far as reminders go
but only for the current date.

Does this make sense?

thanks again

sklpns

 Hello TW friends

in a TW classic version 2.6.0
 you can write this

date popup today DDD, MMM DDth DD MMM

which will give you the current date as link.
When clicked a popup will appear showing all reminders
set per the rules specified at the DatePlugin Tiddler
(omit 'created' section from date popups etc)

 My questions:
 1. Is there a way to have the above link formatted conditionally (ie red)
if a reminder is set for the current date (today)?
 2. Where would I look in order to change the appearance of the displaying
 popup?
 3. Would it be possible to have the same information (todays reminders)
 appear as a popup window
(like the Main TiddlyWiki file saved popup) upon startup and/or at certain
 intervals?

 thanks in advance

[tw] Re: A View Mode Editor and a simple Calcualtor

2015-06-19 Thread Yakov
Hi Vincent,

nice to see that the development is going on! It was a hard year, but
probably I'll be able to provide consistent feedback during most of the
summer.

Now, a couple of things from the top of my head:
1) I haven't been using v 3.2.3 actively and now noticed that it and 3.2.4
have a major bug in table editing: if the first cell is empty, which is
quite a frequent case, like in
||param1|param2|param3|
|object1|value11|value12|value13|
|object2|value21|value22|value23|
, opening cells in the second row opens values of the wrong cell! Minimal
test cases:
||a|
|b|c|
here, b and c raws show empty values;

||a|b|
|c|d|e|
here c and d show empty values while e shows a. Meaning that they
take values from the cells that are to the top left from them.

Even more tricky, if I put those to together in one tiddler (separated with
double line break), editing e in the second table acutally edits a in
the first one! (but /shows/ it as thought as the right cells was changed:
to see the truth, open the ordinary edit mode).

2) I've seen at [1] the discussion about the excel-like interface library.
It works quite nicely (very good thing it does so with the clipboard), so I
wonder if you consider using it. Of'course the fact that it uses jQuery is
quite bad, but if the implementation is not very difficult, this can be
done as an optional addition for those who use twve with TWc.

Best regards,
Yakov.

Re: [tw] If tag, open on top...

2015-06-19 Thread Jeremy Ruston
Just chiming in to say that I'm very keen on these kind of explorations.
For those of us using TiddlyWiki everyday there's a natural tendency to
focus on improvements to the rough edges that we bump against frequently.
But re-imagining the basic reading experience is also very important if we
are to improve it. My goal with TW is to enable somebody like Alex to be
able to directly build prototypes that demonstrate and explore his ideas -
the digital textbook example looks pretty easy to implement as a
disassociated slider (a spontaneous neologism for where the button and
the revealed content are separate from one another).

Best wishes

Jeremy.

Yes, it's just an idea, one born out of navigating the links around

Just as there is a sweet spot for complexity of options where tiddlers
open, there is a similar balance to be struck between non-linearity and
hierarchy, and the amount of text, number and nature of the links from each
 tiddler.

In the documentation I feel that there is a vast variety of navigational
options which are not matched by navigational behaviours. TW is
non-hierachical, but I think some way of conforming to the conceptual
metaphor above is higher in a hierarchy would be desirable.

I think that testing something like this would be the only way to evaluate
 the benefits.

The behaviour of the links in the recently shared Digital Textbook link
[1] is interesting. The in-paragraph links are opened below that
paragraph, not at the top or bottom of the text, and there is a down arrow
to indicate where the link is opened, see screenshot

Tagging text is all about hierarchy, its different from tagging with
system tags: there is meaning for the reader naviagting the text.

Re: [tw] Re: [TW5] URL prettify macro, e.g to show git-issue links as #number

2015-06-19 Thread Jeremy Ruston
Hi Richard

Hi Mario - I found the github api and was just reading up on it. I thought
it might be a good way for me to learn a bit more about how api calls work.

I see your point about calling the api repeatedly - what do you think the
best practice would be in this regard? ie; is there a way to limit the
number of times it gets called (once?) - for example only when the wiki is
 loaded and store the result?

You definitely don't want to be making HTTP calls from macros or widgets;
by the time the call returns the widget/macro might have been destroyed and
recreated by the refresh mechanism.

Here's a potentially workable approach. Issue 1799 has the following URL:

https://github.com/Jermolene/TiddlyWiki5/issues/1799

As a convention, we could store the corresponding title in the text field
system tiddler:

$:/plugins/richardsmith/githubissues/
https://github.com/Jermolene/TiddlyWiki5/issues/1799

Then we need to display an issue we could do so with a transclusion that
falls through to displaying the URL if the title tiddler is missing:

$transclude
tiddler=$:/plugins/richardsmith/githubissues/$(issue-url)$
$(issue-url)$
/$transclude

Then we'd need a startup module or daemon that handles `tm-load-url`
messages, with parameters indicating the URL to load and the tiddler to
store the data. The loading would happen asynchronously, triggering a
refresh when the tiddler is eventually loaded. We would probably need to
take steps to avoid the same tiddler being repeatedly loaded (perhaps we
could rely on XMLHttpRequest to observe the incoming HTTP caching headers).

The final part is triggering the loading. That's tricky because we don't
currently have a way of triggering a message when a chunk of content is
displayed; messages are always triggered by external events like clicks or
timers. The easiest way to experiment would be with a JS macro that sends
the `tm-load-url` message when it is rendered.

That's only an outline, I'd be delighted to help with details. The url
loading mechanism is nicely generic, though.

Best wishes

Jeremy.

I'd echo your suggestion about resumes/CVs. One could imagine a TW edition

then offered a print button that used 5.1.9's open in new window to
open a clean, printable version of the resume.

[tw] Re: [TWC] TiddlersBarPlugin not work well with TiddlerAliasPlugin

2015-06-19 Thread Arc Acorn
Since this has gotten buried to the point where few would see it I figured
I'd bump it for you.

Overall the issue is that the Alias Plugin is playing bait and switch and
the Tiddlerbar plugin isn't smart enough to open the real tiddler so it
tries to display the tiddler that you clicked.

Eg: when [[Post A1]] is clicked Post A is opened but the Tiddler bar is
showing you [[Post A1]] ( = Nothing here).
Which is why the tiddler you want opens but is not focused upon.

So someone with the JS know how just needs to alter the Tiddler bar plugin
to check for alias map logic and go there if available.

Is there anyway to fix it? Thank you all!
