Re: [Tigervnc-devel] Migration to Allura
My main issue with the new platform at the moment is that they've replaced the repository browser. Instead of ViewVC, it's now their own version that, frankly, sucks. There are a lot of beta users, including me, complaining about this. I am hoping they address that issue or provide a ViewVC option before the new SF platform is released. I migrated libjpeg-turbo and have regretted it, because I use the online repo browser enough that not having a fully functional one has been an impediment. Re: [Tigervnc-devel] Migration to Allura
I added a brief list of critical features that I think are missing from the new SVN viewer on this bug report: https://sourceforge.net/p/forge/site-support/480/ Since posting this, they have fixed (2) [apparently a bug] and addressed (4) with the new "Browse Commits" feature. However, the ability to pull up a revision history for just one file and diff between arbitrary revisions of that file is critical. You can follow links in the ticket above to get to about a dozen more tickets regarding user complaints about the new code viewer. Re: [Tigervnc-devel] Migration to Allura
Thanks, I'm now subscribing to that ticket. So, do you (or anybody else) consider the limited ViewVC-replacement a show stopper for the Allura migration? I agree with you that this should really be fixed. OTOH, as a developer, you could use "real" Subversion clients instead to view this information. Several GUIs are available, in addition to the command line tools. And hopefully, the code viewer in Allura will be fixed eventually. My suggestion is thus that we proceed with the migration. I fall into that category too. I am glad DRC brought the viewer to my attention. I really hope none of the projects I work with move to this until these issues are fixed. Re: [Tigervnc-devel] Migration to Allura
The closest comparable feature set I have worked with is the WebSVN tool which is similar to ViewVC. I need to find out if or how it can be used on remote repositories though. Might be a hassle to have to setup another web service/site for it but it would be better than managing a different SVN client on each machine (or multiboot OS) I work with. A quick check shows that it supports local and remote SVN repositories. OTOH, as a developer, you could use "real" Subversion clients instead to view this information. Several GUIs are available, in addition to the command line tools. And hopefully, the code viewer in Allura will be fixed eventually. My suggestion is thus that we proceed with the migration. Re: [Tigervnc-devel] Migration to Allura
Well, if I were going to set up a web tool, I'd just set up ViewVC, since that's what I'm used to, but support for remote repositories in ViewVC is still experimental and has some issues. Because the subversion repositories can't be accessed directly from the project web space on SourceForge, remote access is the only option, and that's certainly going to be a lot slower than direct access (although it may not be terrible if the web tool is installed on SourceForge rather than an external site.) Re: [Tigervnc-devel] Migration to Allura
Your requirements may not be the same as mine. I have to deal with several OS installations with some in a multiboot environment. I never found a good cross platform SVN tool that had all of the features I wanted. I haven't tested WebSVN in a none local configuration yet but it is generally faster than ViewVC for the testing I did. The SVN link will always be the weakest part though. I may set one up and let you know how it works. This is a roll-up of the relevant Allura code viewer features/fixes that I believe are necessary for SF to address in order to provide an environment as usable as ViewVC. If you have a SF account, please consider voting these up so we can get SourceForge's attention. Whenever a user clicks on the "Code" button, use HEAD as the default repository view rather than a sticky revision: https://sourceforge.net/p/allura/tickets/5120/ Provide a means of viewing in-repository static HTML and TXT files directly in the browser: https://sourceforge.net/p/allura/tickets/5772/ Provide more information (commit time, full commit message, file size, download/view links, etc.) in history view: https://sourceforge.net/p/allura/tickets/5773/ Allow diffing between arbitrary revisions in the history view: https://sourceforge.net/p/allura/tickets/4929/ Provide one-click access to history view of a file from directory view: https://sourceforge.net/p/allura/tickets/5774/ Provide a "copied from" link for files that have been renamed/moved: https://sourceforge.net/p/allura/tickets/5775/ -- Free Next-Gen Firewall Hardware Offer Buy your Sophos next-gen firewall before the end March 2013 and get the hardware for free!
