Latham's law of horizontal surfaces states "Any bare horizontal surface
immediately becomes covered with junk."
I would offer a more general law:
A N dimensional surface tends to attrack N+1 dimensional objects to the
saturation limit.

The 5202 down converts by switching the LO on and off at a rate that is
dependent on the input frequency. This on/off rate becomes the IF frequency. It
is sort of like fractional N but worse. There is no image rejection. Some
mixers and DDS's will clean its clock.

Bob,
Thanks for the information. Everything else about this counter is perfect so I
can live with hitting the run button.
John
The 53132 and 53131 behave oddly when the frequency is dropped. Apparently
they do some sort of pre-scaling thing in their firmware. When you drop
frequency 10
frequency because its interleaves counting edges and would be thrown off
if the new edge rate was much slower.
The fact that your counter works as expected casts doubt on this possibility.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Rick,
I turned that off and used a manually set threshold, but it didn't matter.
Some additional information:
Firmware version 3646.
When I change
is 10 times faster with 0.1 s gate time.
Is this behavior typical for this counter?
Thank you
