I hate the Arduino IDE :-)
It hides to much , so i use makefiles and mostly CodeBlocks.
But afaik there is a switch in the Arduino 1.0 IDE to enable the
gcc/build output so you can see what happens behind the curtain.

FE5680s i have (the ones that need 15v 5v)
I have a FE5680 ($100+) that needs only 15v , this one has a PIC a DDS
inside. The PIC can accept commands via rs232 , and then programs the DDS.
It is supposedly adjustable in frequency from ?? to 20Mhz.
