I was going to build the GPS reference by Brooks Shera

and have bought the PCB and started populating it (not much yet).
But now I am wondering if buying a used Z3801A might not be a better idea.
My thoughts are:

6) If one needs to buy a manual on the Z3801A, that will add to its cost.
When I bought mine from BuyLegacy 3 years ago it came with a printed

Just thought I would post a note on what is happening
with websites hosting HP/Agilent manuals. It seems that
Agilent has decided to rein in on websites that are hosting
copies of HP/Agilent manuals. They have sent take-down notices
to BAMA, and ebay, amoung others. They seem to be most

I have received a definative statement from Agilent on this. I will NOT
post full details at this time, until I have received confirmation of
permission from Agilent.
But

Are you saying that some HP- counters/timers/whatever would ship
with an 10811A, whereas another instrument with the same model number
and options ordered would ship with a different oscillator?
It's hard to say. I've seen mil-spec versions of
the 5238A shipped with a EGG 10811 clone. It

Good point. Has someone posted a Z3801A vs.
PRS10/M12+ comparison? I have a lot of data

John,
Reset is really about the only way to do it unless you can see what messages
are coming out and disable them one at a time. If you have LOTS of time you can
just cycle through all the messages and shut them off, but resetting is
probably the easiest thing to do.

2) Anyone have a .pdf of the user/service manual? Mine, I believe, is a

I have a 5370A book on hand. It's on load from a friend,
I've been using an Agilent 82357A USB interface. Plenty fast enough for most

Found mine on ebay for about half price though they seem quite rare.

As the proud new owner of a 5370A, a couple of requests of the list:
1) What do you use/recommend for an HP-IB/IEEE-488 interface for
a PC? (PCI bus). It looks like these things go for more than I
paid for the 5370A! Linux compatibility?
I use the linux-gpib drivers and library with
