[shm] file=anonymous slots=75 debug=10 Should slots be startservers or maxclients? To MaxClients (maximum number of servers that will ever be able to start). In your case 200. OK - I assume that this sets the right size so to speak. Set also the [logger] level=DEBUG Ah! It is OK. create-head-image-reset That's the logic. The easiest way to test is to see the /jkstatus for shmem. Looking very good so far. Doing furthurer tests now. Try to play with the file (not anonymous), perhaps I could figure out what's the problem on your platform. Re: jk2 new shmem using APR
Thanks a lot for this synopsis Glenn. Obviously I am also considering whether I should recommmend moving to Apache2 to our team. - paul r. In message [EMAIL PROTECTED]you write: On Tue, Mar 16, 2004 at 02:48:26PM -, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Greg, As an aside our team will be looking at apache2 and tomcat5 sooner rather than later as it would appear that more development effort is taking place on these platforms. However balancing lots of apps and infrastructure upgrades and testing with day to day support means this will not happen soon. I went through the process of upgrading our servers to Apache2 over the last 9 months. These are Sun servers running Solaris and using the Apache 2 worker MPM. There are alot of advantages to upgrading. My testing found Apache 2 to require a great deal fewer system resources (CPU,memory) when using the worker MPM and be much more scaleable. I also like the way filters work. You can now have Tomcat generate HTML with SSI which mod_include can then parse. This can help scaling for Tomcat. We use it with Tomcat4 and mod_jk 1.2.5, both are working very reliably for us. I did run into a number of problems at first. Most of them were Solaris specific. And some bugs which caused problems. I ended up learning a whole lot more about apache internals than I really wanted to, and even submitted a number of patches which got rolled into later releases. All in all it is working pretty well for us but we still get some core dumps once in a while, nothing that causes apache to completely fail though. We do have one nasty bug we hope the 2.0.49 release will fix. That is a runaway apache process which consumes all memory on the server. That was pretty nasty until we used ulimit on solaris to limit the size of the data and virtual memory segments for apache processes. Now the infrequent times this bug is triggered the apache process core dumps when it hits these memory limits rather than causing general failures on the server due to exhausing all physical and virtual memory. The biggest effort had to be put into making sure all the third party apache modules we use were thread safe. This included patches to mod_jk 1.2 to fix a few thread safe problems. The mod_jk 1.2.5 includes all these patches. All in all it was worth the effort, 9 months later it should be easier for someone with a similar environment to mine to upgrade to apache 2. double submit in form-based authentication throws IllegaStateException
Hello! I'm having a problem when trying to cope with double submits in a form-based authentication in Tomcat 4.1.30. I get to the login page when I try to access a protected page (actually a struts action - .do). I then inform the username and password in the form whose target is j_security_check and, if I just push submit once, everything goes allright, I am authenticated and taken to the struts action, that does its job and forwards to its view. But if I simulate a double submit (impatient users :), I am shown a IllegalStateException, thrown by org.apache.catalina.servlets.DefaultServlet. Well, I downloaded tomcat's source code and traced it to see what was going on. I found out that in the first request org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationFilterChain.internalDoFilter() will call servlet.service(), and in this case the servlet is struts' ActionServlet, whereas in the second (and simultaneous) submit, the servlet invoked is org.apache.catalina.servlets.DefaultServlet. I think this behaviour is probably because in the second submit the resource I !first! requested was j_security_check (the action of the form), and not the struts action (.do extension), like in the first submit). DefaultServlet will then try to serve, in the second submit, j_security_check. It will not find the resource and will try to call response.sendError(HttpServletResponse.SC_NOT_FOUND, request.getRequestURI()); The thing is that, at this point, response.isCommitted() == true, and then it throws IllegalStateException. If we analyse what is actually going on, the problem is not the IllegalStateException itself, but the fact that tomcat is trying to serve j_security_check in the second submit, rather than the struts action I requested in the first place. The exception I get is just a consequence of the wrong processing. Would this be a bug in tomcat? Would there be any workarounds to make it remind that the second submit still has as target the struts action, and not j_security_check as it is currently interpreting? I'd appreciate any thoughts. Best Regards, Andrigo Gomes PS: here is the stack trace I get: java.lang.IllegalStateException at org.apache.coyote.tomcat4.CoyoteResponseFacade.sendError(CoyoteResponseFacade.java:310) at org.apache.catalina.servlets.DefaultServlet.serveResource(DefaultServlet.java:936) at org.apache.catalina.servlets.DefaultServlet.doGet(DefaultServlet.java:518) at org.apache.catalina.servlets.DefaultServlet.doPost(DefaultServlet.java:554) at javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:760) at javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.service(HttpServlet.java:853) at org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationFilterChain.internalDoFilter(ApplicationFilterChain.java:247) at org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationFilterChain.doFilter(ApplicationFilterChain.java:193) at companyFilter.doFilter(some row) at org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationFilterChain.internalDoFilter(ApplicationFilterChain.java:213) at org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationFilterChain.doFilter(ApplicationFilterChain.java:193) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardWrapperValve.invoke(StandardWrapperValve.java:256) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardPipeline$StandardPipelineValveContext.invokeNext(StandardPipeline.java:643) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardPipeline.invoke(StandardPipeline.java:480) at org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.invoke(ContainerBase.java:995) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContextValve.invoke(StandardContextValve.java:191) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardPipeline$StandardPipelineValveContext.invokeNext(StandardPipeline.java:643) at org.jboss.web.catalina.security.JBossSecurityMgrRealm.invoke(JBossSecurityMgrRealm.java:227) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardPipeline$StandardPipelineValveContext.invokeNext(StandardPipeline.java:641) at org.apache.catalina.authenticator.AuthenticatorBase.invoke(AuthenticatorBase.java:492) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardPipeline$StandardPipelineValveContext.invokeNext(StandardPipeline.java:641) at org.apache.catalina.valves.CertificatesValve.invoke(CertificatesValve.java:246) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardPipeline$StandardPipelineValveContext.invokeNext(StandardPipeline.java:641) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardPipeline.invoke(StandardPipeline.java:480) at org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.invoke(ContainerBase.java:995) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext.invoke(StandardContext.java:2422) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardHostValve.invoke(StandardHostValve.java:180) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardPipeline$StandardPipelineValveContext.invokeNext(StandardPipeline.java:643) at

Re: jk2 new shmem using APR
One thing I forgot to mention is that when using the worker MPM and mod_jk with Tomcat it helps reduce Tomcat overhead by reducing the number of Connectors Tomcat requires due to mod_jk being able to use a cached pool of connectors to Tomcat per process. This really helped Tomcat scale better. From requiring 500 Connectors to Tomcat with Apache 1.3 we now rarely need more than 50 connectors to Tomcat with Apache 2. Regards, Glenn On Wed, Mar 17, 2004 at 08:25:59AM -0800, Paul Rasmussen wrote: Thanks a lot for this synopsis Glenn. Re: [Vote] Guenter Knauf as commiter
Hi all, thank you all for your votes! I want to introduce a bit who I am and what I'm doing when I'm not on the list. I'm a self-employee, and my daily work is mainly keeping the various servers (NetWare, Linux, Win32) of my customers running. In addition I also write interfaces to special databases, backup scripts, tools, etc., all very special for my customers. I do a lot with Perl and PHP, but NetWare often forces me to write in C since some of the scripting languages lack of functions which I have on Linux and Win32. In my freetime I maintain my website with a couple of Apache module binaries as well as Apache self. I started initially only with NetWare binaries, that was with Apache 1.3.12; later I added Win32 binaries because I always needed to have something to compare to see if issues are NetWare only, or apply to all suported platforms. Win32 was the choice because of the similar file system structure, both have 'drive letters', on NetWare they are called volumes, and can be much longer than only one letter (but minimum I think 2 chars, or is it 3?). Meanwhile I have Win32 downloads ten times as much as NetWare... Also I'm a SysOp of the Novell Developer forums, and try to help there other developers in getting their Apache1|2 / Perl / PHP problems solved. Also I maintain mod_edir which is a Novell OpenSource module for access control. This is my relationship to Novell, and although I get an _excellent_ support from Novell, I'm not hired. How came I to this list?? Well, mostly Norm and other developers on the forums where guilty for that. There were always questions about 'when will we get mod_jk2 on NetWare?' which I couldnt ask, and Norm kept the ball in move consequently, he tried everything he could manage from his side, but he had to struggle always because our official compiler is is a thing which nobody buys just for fun, just like MSVC. Although meanwhile we have also gcc available, we have still issues with the builds together with Apache (alignment stuff, bitfiels in Apache). Well, now I can answer the questions in the forums that we _have_ mod_jk2 for NetWare..., smile... so thanks again to all for their patience with all the commits! my main focus for the future will be JK and JK2 connectors, keep them compilable with latest Apache2.1 on NetWare, Win32 and Linux (I'm also on the httpd dev list, and seems that we will soon get a first 2.1.0, thanks Sander!). thanks, Guenter. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Minimal HOWTO for jk2 2.0.4 - Was: [Fwd: Releasing JK 2.0.4]
Hi all, probably now I get the -1's back, but nevertheless I'll give it a try...! Did some of you, JFC, Mladen, Guenter, Kurt, Norm could works on a little HOWTO (text based will be suffisant) for jk2, explaining how to set up jk2 in IIS and Apache 2 web-servers ? It could be added to the release and will help remove tons of questions from tomcat-users :) Volunteers welcome (I can't work on it right now) hmm, I think Norm has already offered that he's more than willing to improve the Apache2 docu; and in addition he has already put together such an document in html for NetWare, and I modified it slighty for Win32 (I linked to recently). But since we have to deal with a lot of terms which are almost not or insuffient explained, I think we should all here put the heads together, specially also those which have started with the initial mod_jk2 project, so that we can find proper descriptions of all those terms which also f.e. appear on the jkstatus pages. While I digged last time through BugZilla, I also have read a bunch of cvs commit logs to understand why what was changed, changed then back and so on; and I got the strong feeling that even those who have commited the changes often only did what users requested, but didnt know for sure what's right and what's wrong behaviour. What I have heard a lot is 'read the code', but that isnt allways the best answer, its useless to read the code and understand what's going on unless you know from a docu what's right and what's wrong behaviour; we all should know what the module _should_ do before we try to archive that. I've forwarded a html document to Henri and Mladen which Norm has created, and we all are not able to answer the questions fully and decribe what the terms really mean. Norm will be online in about 1 hour (Australia), and I hope he agrees that we make his document here available It would be very great if all here familar with the connector stuff could clarify this, so that we have a good starting point for any further documentation. I believe that we in one day could put all info together if everyone reads this document with the terms in question, and posts what he thinks is the best description; and also I would like to get replies from all other non-commiters here if that what we put together is understandable at all. something other we should perhaps also discuss is the format of the docu. I think that it is most likely that someone who installs a web connector has also a web browser; and therefore I'm +1 for a html document; however everyone has certainly a text editor, and IIRC Henri and Mladen are +1 for plain text. Since it doesnt matter what we use, I would like to see some feedback from those admins who have to install the connectors what they would prefer. thanks, Guenter. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
