Ok, the weak hash map should allow avoiding leaking memory (hopefully).

The default bare bones implementation of java.util.logging, as provided by Sun
in its JDK, is rather limited for containers. It lacks a good file based logger,
for example. So your class is one part of a container-friendly java.util.logging
implementation. This is not Tomcat specific, and at the moment, we have not
decided to provide such an implementation.

Note: we don't have anything against comments in sources ;)

mod_jk jni worker - apache + number of processes

2005-01-18 Thread Fox,Tim
Hi All-

Apologies for cross-posting from the user group - but in retrospect I believe
this might be a better forum for this question:

I am interesting in using the in processes jni_worker with apache 2.0 on linux.

My question concerns the number of instances of a jvm, and hence tomcat that
will be created.

My understanding is that, on linux the default mpm configuration will have
multiple child server processes created.

Does that mean there will be multiple jvms and hence multiple tomcat instances
instantiated? Or is the jvm somehow shared across processes?

Is it a requirement of using the jni worker that the number of child server
processes is limited to 1 in the apache config?

Any help greatly appreciated.

You listed all the problems JNI connector faces on Linux, and also the
facts why JNI is unusable.
Is it a requirement of using the jni worker that the number of child server
processes is limited to 1 in the apache config?
I would suggest that you forgot all about inprocess JNI on any
unix variant with Apache, or better all together.
Even the stupid .NET has a separate process out of IIS.
Mladen.

RE: mod_jk jni worker - apache + number of processes

2005-01-18 Thread Fox,Tim
Hi Mladen -

Thanks for your reply.

I suspected as much.

My real motivation here is to basically provide a java implementation of an
apache module or filter. I didn't want to communicate via sockets or whatever
to a shared java process due to performance considerations.

Especially for doing stuff like setting the apache uri or filename via the
request_rec, I thought that this would incur too much overhead.

I'm guessing this is something that has been considered before. Any ideas?
Maybe it's already been discounted for these reasons?

Anyway, I guess this is turning into an Apache httpd question rather than a
tomcat one! :)

Ok I took a closer look at what you are trying to do and you can't set the
Security Manager the way you are doing in, since Tomcat already configure a
security manager and the VM doesn't allow this operation. Once the security
manager is set, you can't change it.

Also, if you turn security on, the following will never be invoked:

  if (System.getSecurityManager() == null)
 System.setSecurityManager(new RMISecurityManager());

If you want to achieve what you want, you will need to change the current
codebase and replace the curret security manager. I will see if we can make the
SecurityManager pluggable easily for Tomcat.next.

Re: mod_jk jni worker - apache + number of processes

2005-01-18 Thread Costin Manolache
The only way to do in-process with apache on unix is to use a
multithreaded MPM and a small number of processes ( and lots of
threads). JNI is not much more efficient than IPC - or at least not
in the simplistic use. Even the applets in mozilla/konqueror/etc run out
of process on unix ( but in-process on win and macosx ).

Writting apache modules in java has been attempted before -
unfortunately it never quite worked, and the multiprocess issue is just
one of the problems.

Fox,Tim wrote:
Hi Mladen -
Thanks for your reply.
Anyway, I guess this is turning into an Apache httpd question rather than a
tomcat one! :)

Hi All-
Apologies for cross-posting from the user group - but in
retrospect I believe this might be a better forum for this question:
I am interesting in using the in processes jni_worker with
apache 2.0 on linux.
My question concerns the number of instances of a jvm, and
hence tomcat that will be created.
My understanding is that, on linux the default mpm
configuration will have multiple child server processes created.
Does that mean there will be multiple jvms and hence
multiple tomcat instances instantiated? Or is the jvm somehow
shared across processes?

You listed all the problems JNI connector faces on Linux, and also the
facts why JNI is unusable.

Is it a requirement of using the jni worker that the number
of child server processes is limited to 1 in the apache config?
I would suggest that you forgot all about inprocess JNI on any
unix variant with Apache, or better all together.
Even the stupid .NET has a separate process out of IIS.
Mladen.

   Summary: basic authentication fails in some cases
   Product: Tomcat 5
   Version: 5.5.4
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Windows XP
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P2
 Component: Catalina
AssignedTo: tomcat-dev@jakarta.apache.org
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

setup
- java 1.5.0.1
- tomcat 5.5.4
- UserDatabaseRealm

to cause failuer, using wget as my test client
- wget -O o --http-user=user --http-
passwd=pinotnoir http://localhost:8080/myapp/myjsp.jsp;
- wget -O o --http-user=user --http-
passwd=pinotnoir1 http://localhost:8080/myapp/myjsp.jsp;
- wget -O o --http-user=user --http-
passwd=pinotnoir http://localhost:8080/myapp/myjsp.jsp;

by setting a breakpoint in RealmBase.authenticate, the username/credentials
strings show up as
- user/pinotnoir
- user/pinotnoir1
- user/pinotnoir1 incorrect, should be pinotnoir

The issues seems to be in Base64.decode:

decodedDataCC.allocate(lastData - numberQuadruple, -1);
decodedDataCC.setEnd(lastData - numberQuadruple);
decodedData = decodedDataCC.getBuffer();

decodedDataCC.allocate(lastData - numberQuadruple, -1);
- allocate does not reallocate for the 3 test (pinotnoir) since the buffer was
already big enough from the previous request (pinotnoir1)
- setEnd sets an end flag
- getBuffer just gets the byte[], which is too big (pinotnoir1)

from there on, things are just messed up.

for a quicky, I have just hacked the CharChunk.allocate to remove the size
check:

public void allocate( int initial, int limit  ) {
isOutput=true;
//  if( buff==null || buff.length  initial ) {
buff=new char[initial];
//  }
this.limit=limit;
start=0;
end=0;
isOutput=true;
isSet=true;
}

Status: NEW

I have an ant target as follows (for remote deploying):

  target name=remote-deploy
   description=Deploy application to remote host
echo message=Deploying war to remote host: ${host} with tag ${tag.war}/
deploy url=http://${host}:8080/manager;
username=${tomcat.username}
password=${tomcat.password}
path=/${app.name}
update=true
tag=${tag.war}
war=file:${gen.dir}/war/${webapp.war}/
  /target

A few days ago I noticed the following output from my nightly ant build:

   [deploy] FAIL - Encountered exception java.io.FileNotFoundException:
/servers/jakarta-tomcat-5.0.24/work/Catalina/localhost/manager/sws-1.1-prod-2005
-01-10-2341/sws.war (No such file or directory)

Something had happened to the filesystem, so the deploy wasn't successful. Even
though the deploy failed, I got a BUILD SUCCESSFUL at the end of the ant output.

Shouldn't that instead be a BUILD FAILED?

Not that it should matter, but I do use the ant-contrib foreach task to call
my remote-deploy target, in parallel, as follows:

foreach target=remote-deploy param=host
delimiter=${line.separator}
parallel=true
list=${remote-hosts} inheritall=true/

Thanks in advance,

Nice try, but your analysis of the problem is wrong (and the quick fix is very
bad). The issue is in BasicAuthenticator:
if (colon  0) {
...
} else {
char[] buf = authorizationCC.getBuffer();
username = new String(buf, 0, colon);
password = new String(buf, colon + 1,
buf.length - colon - 1);
}
This need to use authorizationCC.getEnd as the end of the buffer, rather than
its length. I'll test it.

to add a Context element to server.xml with a ResourceLink to the global
resource to make it visible to your web app.

ManagerBase.createEmptySession() was added in 4.1.20.

Based on the mail archives (see URL) I assume that this is sufficient to close
this bug report.

Hi Ryan, fancy meeting up here :) You don't mention, so
I'll confirm - you are using mod_jk 1.2.8 (brand new release)?
This sure sounds like the (rather obscure) issues with re-piping
body content, and taking a simple guess, if you drop back and
force http/1.0 (eliminate chunking) the issue goes away?

I have been unable to get Tomcat to give me more log messages. The web

don't want to go to jk2. but I am at a loss as to where to go from here.

Can anybody suggest a possible solution?

Thanks,

Actually, both 1.2.6 and 1.2.8 of mod_jk. What do you mean re-piping body
content? I haven't forced http/1.0 yet, I was about to trace through
Apache to find the problem. My initial investigation looks like the
problem is in Apache somewhere, looks like
ap_setup_client_block/ap_should_client_block.

Yeah, java.util.logging is very bare bones, and probably very few apps running
inside Tomcat use it. But
the fact remains that some web apps will use it, perhaps providing their own
more sophisticated
handlers. I think it makes sense for any container to provide the best support
possible for apps using
standard APIs, even if those APIs aren't perfect.

I'm sorry - totally missed the Apache 1.3 bit in your first
post (I was thinking 2.0 filtering issues.) This also sort
of eliminates chunking as the issue.

Have some of my own efforts in Apache 1.3 at the moment,
if I see anything I'll follow up again.
