Probably a late answer, but when you're saying that have been no changes to the sourcecode since alpha, you mean, that http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=36541 is still open for 5.5.12? So the bug is "resolved/fixed" but actually unfixed for next 6 month?
