Thank you all for discussing the problematic JDK redistribution.
And now to the next step:
To verify the existence of JDK on the customer machine, can I rely ( on
Windows NT 2000 )
on the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Development Kit\1.2

Hello,
Does Tomcat needs the installation of JDK 1.2.2?
If yes, what specific jars ( or any other resources ) are needed?
Thanks,
Eitan
Yes you do.
Or better get(download) the jdk1.3.1
Allan.

Thanks Sam,
Actually, my intention was to ask if Tomcat need JDK at all.
Now it's clear
that the answer is yes.
I want

If you are using just servlets, you don't need a JDK.
If you are
deploying JSPs then you need the JavaC compiler (in the
tools.jar file in
the later versions of the JDK), which is the component that
Sun indicates
that you are not supposed
that this is the file that they want to restrict.

He's right, I remember reading that too. I think it's in the javadocs/tools
section, and possibly in the agreement blurb they put over the agree

You know, i was thinking this the other day..
Here I am with this Windows application i've written, and me not being
able to distribute the OS that runs it for free without Microsoft's
permission.
I mean, i actually have to expect the user to install over 500MB of
software before my program

I've never heard of a defense contractor that was giving

One more thing; did you actually read my post? Doesn't seem like

Yes, I did read your post in it's entirety, and believe I said, I agree. If
not then that's what I intended to imply.

Right. Making your point pointless. Why don't
people believe in making sense anymore?
Whatever, if you are having a bad day let's talk off list. We've wasted enough
bandwidth. My point concerned Java JDK distribution not being free.

I'm not having a bad day. I'm always an ass. If your point
