i have managed to solve the problem ..

the solution was staring at my face all the time

i just the mysql-j-connector.jar file  into  the common/lib folder :)

Try the jspbook - http://www.jspbook.com . You can download the entire book after you register. It's written for tomcat 5 using jdk 1.4 but seems to translate well for tomcat4 (for the most part). This will help.
