Using Apache/Tomcat this way, we reduced the open files, sockets and
the processes on our production server by over 70 percent!
(We are looking forward to Tomcat 5's progress concering threads and
open files ;-)

Sorry for the unintentional double posting.
I did suggest my first posting would have been lost.
With hindsight I think a temporary DNS problem at our side has deferred my
first posting due to lack of sender domain resolvability.
