Lee helped me troubleshoot the HiZ issues. Here is what turned out to be.
I compared 800 ft beverages with the HiZ. The beverages have a DXE preamp.
I use Flex 6600 and the beverages work best with 8 db ANT gain in the Flex.
On 160m, HiZ works best with 24 db gain in the Flex.
When ANT gain in

I have 600 ft reversible BevFlex beverages and recently I bought a used HiZ
4-8.
Both are about 300ft away from a shunt-fed tower for 160m and 4 sq for 80m.
On 80m, HiZ has a better F/B and hears slightly clearer than the beverages.
On 160m Hi-Z is deaf, with S/N at least 6 db below the

I have a 100 ft tower with jk mid tri 40 on top. When shunt fed, it was
pretty competitive on 160. Recently the antenna seems to be a few db
weaker. The only change was adding another beam at 60ft. Could it have had
an impact? Adding the beam only marginally affected the match.

Do more radials on a 160m vertical bring more improvements than shown
by simulation?
Most simulations, e.g. by EZNEC, show that going above 32 radials on 160m
brings minimal improvement, say 1 db to 2 max. Even for low angle signals.
On the other hand, some really loud stations on 160m, that
Did anybody try SO2R or SO2V contesting on 160 with Flex 6600?
Normally I use diversity of the main TX antenna and beverages. With the TX
antenna most of the signals are readable but weaker ones are just a trace.
WIth the beverage often signals from other directions are not present.
When running
My shunt fed tower has 36 radials 70 to 100 ft long. Would adding a few
longer radials towards EU help to EU?
Eznec says no.

Now for 2 weeks my QTH hears a static-like S9+ noise on 160m, 80, and to a
less extent, 40m. No static heard on 30-10m. Makes 160/80m bands useless.
Beverages and 4 sq point to the East.
Seems the static is just within the ground wave of 40m but beyond that of
30m. Does anyone know the extent of
Interesting observations with dipoles and high angle of arrival at
sunrise/sunset. But from graphs, the beverage also has a fairly high
radiation angle.
I am wondering whether anybody has compared beverages on 80m with RX
vertical arrays or transmit 4 sq. On 80m, my Beverages are a bit
better
Lately when I worked a VK on 160m, the transmit antenna antenna heard
better than beverages. In other cases with the VKs, the beverages were
better but not by much. I am wondering why this is the case. Beverages make
a big difference to other directions.
The transmit antenna is 100ft shunt-fed
I operated on a pier over salt water on 160m in 3 locations. Once with
baloon for an inv L. KW with short antenna creates special problems. See my
message yesterday.
Short radials will have extremely high voltage at a KW level. Small metal
plate on salt water may have water sizzling or would
There was a report from an expedition where the radials in water did not
work well but over water did. Over salt water, one radial (counterpoise) is
enough and more do not add performance.
I used Expert 1.3k with a tuner. The amp turned itself off hundreds of
times over the past few years due to
I would like to share my experiences with 160m operations during the SP
contest last December.
My rental house in St George Isl FL had a 140 ft pier over the bay. Also a
power line to the end of the pier raising questions about RFI.
I set inv L at the end of the pier with 40ft Spiderpole, 70ft
A number of articles analyzed 160m verticals by simulation. Once the height
was lambda/8 and the number of radials >= 16 (buried) or >=4 (elevated),
the difference in gain was at most a few db.
I operated the 2017 Stew contest from a northern beach of St George Island,
FL. The antenna was inv L
I have an 80m full-size wire vertical and 160m inv L using the same 8 long
elevated (and tuned) radials, each 20m long and 2m high. The RCS-4 switch
picks up either antenna. Having separate feeds makes tuning simple.
Compared to an 80m flattop at 20m fed with ladderline, the 80m vertical is
I have received a used 3-el HI-Z but without the phasing line. What is its
electrical length?
I saw some notes that it should be 27 degrees long. But this is frequency
dependent.
Urgent question as it should be ready for this evening.

Deg. We ship a 29.8 foot cable of our brand.
If the array is spaced 40 foot then the delay is 19 Deg at 1.850 MHz and a
length of 23.6 foot.
You should be OK using this footage witn most brands of RG-6 cable.
Good luck

I listened to the ARRL 160m contest in VK2 in 2006 and in 2011. In 2005 I
heard many NA stations clearly. In 2011 I could hear many NA stations but
strong static prevented copying complete callsigns except for VE3EJ. The
antenna in 2011 was invL 20m high and 40m long, with a few radials.

HI-Z is not selling so I am asking whether anybody has used Hi-Z for sale?
All except HI-Z 8, for which I have no space.

I was planning to buy a 4 sq receive system for the upcoming CQ160 contest.
One question is about handling of high power when the 4sq cannot be put far
away from the tx antenna. HI-Z claims that their system is immune to high
power. DX Engineering claims the opposite and requires a sequencer. The
