As I mentioned before, the problem that I found was that there weren't many
NA stations calling CQ.
I heard quite a few calling EU stations, but that was on THEIR frequency.
I didn't want to put out a CQ Call during the contest, as I would have had
hundreds of EU stations calling me ! (I
me a better chance to
see how well I can hear NA,
Just wondering how did guys over this side find NA prop and how did the NA
guys find prop to EU??
Thanks
Trevor

That's a nice cheap board, and worth using considering it has relay
switching too . . .
However, the circuit seems odd . . . I used transformers in and out on my
Loop Preamp, to give a match to 50 ohms.

I meant to add that as well as having a better signal/noise ratio than my
main antenna, it's particularly useful in a Contest, like this weekend's
CQWW.
It makes it easier to pick out the DX signals between the strong Europeans .
. . on the Loop the EU stations are weaker, but the DX stations
Hi John
I built a 6ft diameter 4-turn 160m receiving loop a few weeks ago - did you
see my write-up on qrz.com?
It's installed up in my loft, pointing E-W, and is varicap tuned (sending DC
down the coax)
It works really well on DX - I've worked about 100 North and South American
stations using
Many thanks for the info Jeff . . . I had wondered where he was.
Like others, I have worked Jack countless times over the decades on 160m.
Always a great signal, and always takes the trouble to give you a call if he
hears you on.
If you're in contact again, do please pass my very best to him
It seems to me that DX conditions have been pretty poor for the past 10
years on 160m . . .
But apart from generally being poor (even when the band is open), there is
something strange I have noticed.
For me, over the decades, best propagation on 160m has always been around
our Sunrise . . .
Hi Steve
Are you ever around at our UK sunrise? (currently around 06.30Z)
This is the best time for me to work VK/ZL

Really good to hear 160m in good shape last night! Worked nearly 40
stations on CW, including across to Arizona and several in Texas, most of
whom answered my CQ DX calls. (might have worked more if I stayed on
longer, but needed to get to bed!)
Having said that, these conditions are what I
self to take a nap during the day. Not as young as I used to
be...

Hi Trevor
Read Joe, W4TV's answer again !
The coil should be whatever inductance you need to resonate your slightly
short antenna . . . then you can use that coil as an auto-transformer to get
a good match, ie once the antenna is resonant, you can feed your coax a few
turns up the coil.
But
There are usually several of us Europeans on at around our Sunrise (about
0630Z) . . .
But even though the band is open (as you can see on RBN), no stations about
to work !

Yes, managed to work a few more stateside stations on SSB in the CQ WW
contest last night.
But because of the clocks going forward to GMT, woke up an hour after
sunrise, so missed checking the band this morning Tom!

>Really good to hear 160 conditions getting better by the day!
I had never used baluns on any antennas for 45 years . . .
But about a year ago I made a couple of ferrite choke baluns . . . one for
my 160m dipole, one for my W3DZZ, just to see if made any difference to the
local noise (from electrical garbage) - the designs were recommended to me
by G3TZQ.
Well, I spent a few hours on the CQ WW last night, trying to pick out DX
amongst all the strong European stations . . .
Didn't hear a single North American station ! (even though I'm sure all the
big signals were on)
Perhaps conditions will improve tonight.

I appreciate the point about trying to get youngsters interested in the
hobby . . .
However, the trouble with the computer-based Digital modes is that there is
no SKILL involved in having a contact - it's your Computer having a contact!
That lack of skill and therefore achievement is what gets
Hi All
Despite being a keen 160m DX-er for the past 45 years, I've just finally
joined this Reflector ! So I'm looking forward to reading 160m related
posts.
What made me decide to join was reading through the 160m receiver
comparisons - very interesting. I stayed with my FT101E (with 250Hz
