First time in the Stew Perry. 22 contacts just by running up and down the band.
just been trying the inverted L after coax change from rg8x to 50ohms hard
line. notice much better reception and notice that stations that i call was
copying me pretty quick taking in consideration that i just run 100 watts, band
noise, etc, etc. Also i was using the winkeyer with N1MM and the cw sound was kind
of erratic . it only happens with N1MM with other contest and login software
the cw tones are perfect.did some changes in N1MM winkeyer section but still
the same way.Other than that i enjoy the Stew Perry.73's de KP2BH / KP2DXjimmy

2016-03-13 Thread Kenneth Grimm
Both 3DA0IJ and 3DA0CC have posted their logs on Clublog.

The stats are interesting: 3DA0IJ 259 Qs on 160mx and 3DA0CC 168 for a
total of 427 top band QSOs.

They are both to be commended for sticking with their promise to
concentrate on 160 when possible. Their ears will probably be ringing for
several days from all the QRN they had to endure. While it was rough in
the Northern Hemisphere where winter condx prevailed, they had to endure
summer condx in Swaziland!

Topband: Untoward comments on 160

2016-03-13 Thread Gary Smith
I rarely get on SSB but there's a net of good folks on 1.850 that I
do enjoy joining in with every so often. A couple days ago I was
stunned to hear someone QRMing the frequency with childish comments.
Again, I don't habit SSB much but I've never heard that kind of
comments on 160 that I can remember. As we all know, 20M & 80 are
rife with this kind of mentality.

One of the fellows in the net, with a voice reminiscent of a good
teacher, instead of chiding the guy, suggested someone was out there
and would he like to join in the discussion? He said this with
dignity though I'm assuming nobody would expect someone who has been
QRMing to give their call and join in at that point. It must have
gotten through to the guy though, that he wasn't going to get back
what he was giving and he must have QSYed to harangue another net as
he didn't interrupt again while I was listening.

Amazes me; it takes years to accumulate enough skill and equipment to
get on the air with a good signal, especially on 160 and then become
a participant in the opposite mentality of what the sport is all
about. I guess we all can put some kind of reason in our heads as to
why those very few do this and probably each of us will guess
somewhat correctly but I'm still dumbfounded when it happens; It
takes such a low level of society to entertain doing this. I guess
that is why in the society we all live in, law enforcement is needed.

My 2 centavos.

Re: Topband: [Elecraft] KIO3B

2016-03-13 Thread Gary Smith
Mike,

I am using a K3s but the KIO3B is the same for us and I believe the
config settings are the same for a K3 with it. I have the USB from
the KIO3B going to a powered USB hub with 5 devices total on it. I
have the RS232 from the K3s going to a P3 with the CBLP3Y.

I was working the Stew Perry contest last night, using N1MM and using
its macros to send CW. The only problem I had in sending is in
remembering which function key to hit as using a keyboard to send CW
is new to me (Well... I did have an Apple II+ back in 1981 that had a
board in it for CW/RTTY but nothing keyboard to send CW since then)

Someone (here, I believe) kindly helped me with the settings to use
with N1MM & the K3 and be sure if you use N1MM, to have in CONFIG,
the PTT-KEY set to OFF - RTS. I don't know if any of this will help
you but I can say that up to 30 WPM, there is no problem on this end
whatsoever. Your solution will likely be easy to resolve once you pin
it down.

Re: Topband: Stew -vs- 3DA0CC

2016-03-13 Thread Charlie
Ken, I second your comment commending Arunas and Ark for their efforts at C9
and 3DA0.

Last night when they were on earlier at 1820.3, there was much QRM from the
contest. If there was any prop to my QTH, their signal could not be detected.
Later when Arunas came up on 1815.8, the contest QRM was not a factor at all,
even though for much of the night I could not hear them.

Every night they were on from C9 or 3DA0, I was in the chair listening. There
was some light copy from C9, but not enough signal to overcome my persistent
local powerline noise. Same for 3DA0, except for a brief period around 0254
UTC.  They came up enough to where I felt some repetitive calls were justified;
I was reasonably confident if they answered me or someone else, I could copy
the response. This turned out to be the case, although their signal was just
out of my local noise. I was getting discouraged after missing 7P8 and C9
because of this ongoing noise situation, so it was very gratifying to get
3DA0IJ in the log.

Last fall I invested in a portable 1 MHz to 1 Ghz receiver and a dual band
144/432 MHZ yagi. Prior to calling the power company for help, considerable
time was spent with this equipment locating the four offending noise sources.
In November the power company engineer visited my QTH, and I provided a Google
map with the offending poles identified, spectrum displays of the noise, plus I
actually identified the noise for the engineer on the portable receiver. He
promised to bring a crew out and deal with it. Here it is mid-March and no
power company help has been forthcoming. Now that winter is behind us (I
hope), it is now time to start complaining.

I am not optimistic about VK0 and FT4/J but will be in the chair listening. Of
the recent expeditions needed on Topband, we have only missed logging 7P8 and
C9 so there is some hope.

I have an NCC-1 DXE box and it works great, but when there is more than one
noise source active at one time, you are out of luck.

Thanks to Arunas for the new one!

So let me get this straight..if I am running DX , and someone running
excessive power wanders by and wants to take my frequency (for whatever
reason)

then I am supposed to just give it up?

In the infamous words of Jill Taylor (Home Improvement Sitcom TV show from

The only time I give up my frequency willingly is in the NA SPRINTS

Eric, NO3M Wonderful workmanship in that 1928 MOPA transmitter !
Congratulations !

When this old PC was turned on this morning an error came up and the date and
all times
in the log were changed to year 2004 !!! Gulp !

I know what this year is but,
in order to correct all the log times at least one QSO time reference will be
needed.

So if someone would send me the time of a QSO it would be greatly appreciated.
I didn't work many but would like to make sure those who agonized through a
QRP QSO with me get the well deserved credit.

Thank you and 73,

Jim / W1FMR NH

Let me see if I understand this.

Someone is complaining that other ops are not upholding the concept of
160-Meters being the "gentleman's band", and that same person who is
complaining uses cut letters for profanity and runs 2 kW?

Joel, maybe both of us need to stay more up to date. See you in Houston

Heard Jim, K9JWV, around 0216z with good sigs, but couldn't get his
attention.

Caught Jim, K9YC, calling CQ low in the band, gave it a try and made an
easy QSO. Jim/YC's QRP sigs have been getting better the last few
contests compared to prior years as we are heading down the backside of
the cycle. Cpngrats on working CT!

So far worked maybe a couple dozen or more west of the Rockies, KV4FZ,
NP2X, KH6ZM, and GW3YDX with the '28 MOPA; hand still in good shape
despite many CQs on the bug.

I'm about to pull the plug, sun is out here and my short nap in the
wee AM didn't help much. Excellent Jim made his QRP contact with CT,
nice to get something difficult, accomplished.

Best distance for me at my 99W was T32CO. Missed a few stations that
couldn't hear me, especially a bunch of EU on early in the test. Did
get Italy though.
