Tim, Bill, thanks for posting the files. FWIW: I'm hearing it this evening
on both 80 and 160. The sounds on both bands are essentially identical --
as far as this tired old audio engineer can discern.
Now the kicker... in real time they sound almost nothing like the recording
Tim forwarded.
Thanks for this discussion guys.
For years I have head a sound similar to the recording by N3QE but it is not
exactly the same. Mine sounds more like the one described by WS6X. The four
bursts/spacing interval between the bursts seems longer than on N3QE’s
recording. Didn’t give it much
Tim N3QE was on the money regarding the Wallops Island (VA) Dynasonde,
although the 160 version sounds lower in pitch and is longer in duration.
That's probably because at lower frequencies the pulses need to be
proportionally longer to get the required resolution. It's definitely
wideband as
I think I'm hearing two groups of four bursts, with the first burst from the
second transmitter coinciding with the last burst from the first transmitter.
Anyone agree?

Here is a recording (made on 80M a few years ago but sounds substantially
the same on 160M) of what I'm told is the Wallops Island Ionosonde:

Here is the waveform showing 4 louder cycles followed by three softer

I too, am curious as to the source. I heard it for many years in Central
California; hear it at my current QTH in Central Shenandoah Valley; and heard
it last weekend at NR4M.
I describe it as a scratchy sound, sometimes with a bit of tonality. Always 4
pulses (although I don't think I've ever
Sorry guys, I thought I posted the following about a month ago. Must be a long

Ken,Good catch! Heard i u calling uk9aa but never heard him. He's been spotted

Otherwise, checked the band several times but never heard EU last nigjt, 0500 -

Best 73.
Roger G3YRO and a French station (F6AGM?) made it into the log.I heard
several other EU stations with nice signals but did not work them as they
were in QSO and my operating time was only during TV commercials as I was
watching the Olympics.
I worked UK9AA last month and tried to work him
I am happy to work anyone again, as many times as they choose to answer my

Just about every signal on Top Band is DX from this part of the world.

Thanks for the QSO Roger. If it were not for your exhortation to be on the
band on Wednesday evenings, I would have missed a QSO with UK9AA. That's a
fairly rare one from this side of the pond.

Well conditions were strange last night . . .
Generally poor propagation . . . and high background noise here (even on my
Rx aerial) - apologies if you were one of the stations I heard calling, but
couldn't pull out of the noise.
However, I did manage to work 16 NA stations in the 2 hours I
