Mystery solved
TDR mode on my AIM 4170 revealed problems with the coax that I did not know
were there.
All working good now, thanks everyone for the help!

Topband gurus:
I'm a very active lurker here but try to keep quiet so everyone doesn't
know my lack of lowband skills. This weekend's Field Day has me itching to
get back into lower bands again. ( I had burned up/out doing 26 hamfests a
year hawking 'one of those SDR radio companies'.)
I had to

I have installed the new ground rod and I am using a pre-amp at the feed-point.
I will measure the SWR over the weekend after work calms down.

Mark,
I'm no expert and relatively new to the Beverage antenna but have done
lots of experimenting with them.
My thoughts
First don't give up short Beverages work just fine...you just work with
with you have.
I would try to use good rg6 one piece no splice...you should not have to

I'm hoping that Mark will share his VSWR measurements with us,
otherwise he's asking for help but keeping us in the dark...

Hi Mark,
After following this thread, and assuming that your coax connectors etc.
are properly installed, I strongly suspect that you need to improve your RF
earth ground. Its resistance is likely too high.
Add some random-length ground radials, about 4 or 5 of them running from
the rod in
Hi Greg,
Four to six feet is not too high for a Beverage on 160 through 40 meters
Beverage sensitivity improves gradually with increased height and th
rear lobe and sidelobes increase (directivity degrades) gradually with
increased height.
The only Beverages I ever installed lower than
“How does a 250 ft long, BI-directional beverage even work? Thats only .5
wavelength long on 160m,
and only 1 wavelength long on 80m.“
At my QTH a 300’ unterminated beverage at 3’ is FABULOUS on 160 meters. It’s a
true marvel. I can hear signals buried in the noise on my other RX

* 250 feet of insulated wire strung out in 030 degrees direction toward EU,
pretty straight, varying in height from 4 to 6 feet, running through thick
brush with no metal objects or artificial elements along the run.
This is a bit high for a beverage.
* 9:1 transformer at feed point
