Re: Topband: Bill N4AR; killed in auto accident

2021-12-08 Thread Nagi

Hi Topband friend,

Sorry for the late post.
Bill was a special friend to me.
In the 1970s, when he was still a K4GSU, we did QSO on 80m CW almost
every day in winter. After that, we were able to QSO many times even on
160m.

In 1981, I traveled by car around United States to visit my low bands
friends.
I visited my friends who were active on 160m. They were hospitable to a
young man from the Far East.

They are Stew W1BB, Earl K6SE and many other friends.
Of course, I also visited Bill N4AR and received warm hospitality from
him and Betty.

I remember Scott was still a really small child then.
After visiting them, I visited John W5SUS and I met one of my best
friends Stan K5GO/ZF9CW. Kevin was still a toddler, but now he's a great
world-class contester as N5DX.

I married Rie in 1992 and chose the U.S. and Canada as our honeymoon
destinations. I made a journey across my 160m friends again with her.

We were accommodated at many friends' houses. Jeff K1ZM, Jack VE1ZZ etc..
Of course, I didn't forget to introduce Rie to Bill N4AR and Betty.
It had been 11 years since I had seen them, but I was warmly welcomed again.
I'm really sad Bill's gone. I'm so sorry.
You will be missed.
RIP to Bill.

73 and 161. Aki JA5DQH

So sorry to hear this news. Bill was a very kind and humble person. I
visited him at his house in about 1980 and still think about that visit on
a regular basis.

Dan to inform that Bill N4AR ex: K4GSU was killed in an auto accident.
I understand his wife servived but is injured.
Info relayed to me by N8DX

Bill was an amazing operator.
He had what must of been the largest antenna farm anywhere at one time.
Two many towers to count.

Found memories of picnics hosted by Bill on Sunday of Dayton Hamventions
weekends. Always a gracious host.

You will be missed

Topband: Andy (DL8LAS) strong into Midwest USA last night (recording)

2021-12-08 Thread Don Kirk
Andy (DL8LAS) had a very nice signal into the Midwest US last night. I
made a brief recording of him calling CQ and uploaded it onto youtube.
Peaks were very strong but there was also considerable QSB (somewhat rapid
and deep).

Here is a link to the video for those interested.

ОК ОК ОК

But I'm not talking about the official approach.

I am familiar with all super RX stations ( 160 м) in zone 16 - RA4LW,
UR0MC, RL3A

A mediocre station UT6UD shows a fantastic result. I drew the attention
of the world community to this.

I especially wanted the founders of CQ WW to better defend this context.

Thanks !

please read the contest rules. No recording for assisted stations.
That's bad, hope recording will be asked for all stations for next
year and make them public, like the logs

I can demonstrate the sound recording of each of my QSOs at CQ WW

Re: Topband: Need antenna help

2021-12-08 Thread Rob Atkinson
The problem with adding a top wire to your 43 foot vertical is that it
is probably not made to support a wire pulling on it at the top,
unless it's cross section is uniform and it is guyed at the mid-point
and top so it doesn't pull over. What is often done in this situation
is that a trap is employed at the top between the vertical and wire so
any RF above 160 m. doesn't make it to the wire. That was the HyGain
HyTower 160 m. add-on kit design.

Or, you can use the 43 foot vertical (if it is strong enough) to hold
a separate wire on insulated standoffs for 160 and feed the wire at
the base for 160. I do that with my 1/4 w. 80 m. vertical; the
inverted L wire is about 3 feet out from the 80 m. mast. To be
honest, I recommend something like that for 160 and 80 m., over the
same ground system, with some other solution for 40 on up. I'm not a
big fan of the 43 foot vertical which has some strange fascination for
many hams.
