You guys rocked!

S9 up to +20 here in the Seattle area for hours. Only signal from KH6/7 like
that, for that long, came from the legendary Jack Wheeler, KH6CC. Big shoes to
fill. I'm guessing your toes should be feeling a little bit pinched by now.
Great job!

Looking for you in the CQ WW 160.

the December Stew Perry TBDC

Dave and I (Rob, NH6V) have been enjoying experimenting with antenna setups on
the east coast of the "Big Island" of Hawai'i in several of the 160 contests
since December 2022.

We run 1500W to a full-size 1/4λ wire sloping ~50° up to the top of a 150'
Cook pine tree across the road from the beach. It runs off of two 130'
elevated radials that run parallel to the coastline and perpendicular to the
direction of North America and Europe.. 35°. The feedpoint is back about 25'
from the ocean and it even gets occasionally hit by the large crashing surf
(!). A pretty ideal antenna, as it turns out.

For RX this year, it was necessary to deploy a single direction K9AY loop in
order to null out a new, S-3 (at 3 kHz bw) power line noise emanating from the
neighborhood about 1km to the northwest. We didn't experience this noise for
the ARRL 160. Unfortunately, the noise is also coming from the same direction
as Japan. So this ended up being our sole receive antenna, and we must say that
it was most beneficial and kudos go out to K9AY for this especially innovative
antenna design. Thank you, Gary!

Driving 4' ground rods into the lava rocks wasn't too easy. There was also a
good amount of seawater wetted sand to help lower the resistance - we're
guessing no better than about 100Ω.

Thanks for the QSOs! Your participation is greatly appreciated by all. We hope
to continue operating from this portable location in all future 160 contests.

Look for our report with additional details on www.3830scores.com - to be
updated within the next couple of days.

Topband: Big Stew Perry 2023

2024-01-01 Thread Roger Kennedy

Well we had big storms again here in Britain a week ago . . . and the 10ft
tall remains of a tree that I had a big pole lashed to (to hold the far end
of my Dipole) was snapped off at the base !

So after the holiday I ordered a big angle iron . . . got it delivered . . .
painted it with Hammerite . . . dug a big hole . . . concreted in the angle
iron . . . then got the pole lashed to it, and then the Dipole back up . .
. all in time for this weekend's Stew Perry Contest . . .

But as others have mentioned, lousy conditions !

I popped on the band three times during the night . . . and only
heard/worked 6 North American Stations. Even most Europeans were weaker than
normal.

Anyway . . . Happy New Year to all TopBanders !

I posted two audio recordings on the site:

http://www.topband.in.ua/2024/01/01/big-stew-perry-2023-uy0zg-qsos-w2xl-k9om/

Listening to DX on 160 is comparable to listening to good music.

FT lovers are depriving themselves of such pleasure. They look at the
computer monitor and instead of music they see only notes.

Sorry, correction

 Couldn't get through to three people - N3DXX, K5KG, K3CCR.

Probably the best result in Europe is SK3W:

In my log, the best ones from the US are MA operators.

Five stations!

The conditions are weak, but very interesting.

Many from the US have excellent RX.

Topband: Big Stew - A Wipe-out Down-Under

2024-01-01 Thread Phil Hartwell via Topband

Greetings Topbanders,

I'm sorry to say the Stew was just about a non-event in this part of the
world. The only stateside station I heard/worked was Tree, K7RAT, within
the 1st hour, when he peaked up at his SR. The following evening (VK6
time), I was set and ready to go, about 1/2 hour before my SS at 1123z,
hoping to snare a good few east coast W's, but it was a complete
wipe-out. The only station I heard was Ron, VK3IO, who was much weaker
than normal, when he worked Steve VK6VZ, with difficulty. I think the VK
contingent threw in the towel not long after that. I didn't hear or see
any trace of anyone from anywhere after that.

It looks like things were much better in the northern hemisphere and I
hope you all enjoyed the event, with hopefully some new ones.

Oh well, here's hoping for better next time, surely it couldn't be any
worse for us down-under.

Happy New Year All, 73, Phil VK6GX.
