Re: Topband: NCC-2 antenna pattern?
Come on, JC... Even I know, YOU know what K9YC is talking about! After living in IN for 15 years, CA for 34 years, and VA for 10 years, with essentially the same station setup, over the long term, for success on TB, QTH is paramount. (detuned TX antennas notwithstanding) BTW: I like your initials! 73, Jim - WS6X On Mon, Dec 18, 2023, 9:26 PM wrote: > So you cannot detune a TX antenna in IL, just in Florida? > > JC > Archives: http://www.contesting.com/_topband - Topband Reflector > > > _ > Searchable Archives: http://www.contesting.com/_topband - Topband > Reflector > _ Searchable Archives: http://www.contesting.com/_topband - Topband Reflector
Re: Topband: VK6GX in the Spring Stew
Phil called me on Sunday morning (local) just a bit after my SR. I kept getting "6GX" and then got the "V." There was just too much QRN and QSB for my little RX antenna to pull it through. Sorry Phil!! I was running 100 Watts to an Inv-L. Topband: Warning: OT!
I completed a CREI course - BET (Bachelor of Engineering Technology). CREI, stood for Capitol Radio Engineering Institute, a division of McGraw Hill. Before that I received a diploma in Broadcast Engineering from CIE, Cleveland Institute of Electronics. At the time I was working for Crown International, Elkhart, IN. Topband: Question about on ground radials field.
Hello Gang, This is somewhat related to the "Will radials on ground help?" thread. I have poked around in various discussion groups but haven't found a specific answer. Assuming I have a fairly decent radial system on the ground (60 radials of various lengths, some longer than 1/4 wave, many shorter), what happens if I elevate the feedpoint of a quarter-wave, base-fed vertical? Let's say I have an aluminum mounting post properly bonded to the radial plate, the top of which will serve as the "radial system" connection for the vertical. Is there some fractional part of a wavelength that the feedpoint could be raised and not lose the effectiveness of the on ground radial system? Thanks, and HNY to all! Re: Topband: CQWW Condx on 160 a Bust
When I toured 160 on Friday evening (local) I was dismayed at what seemed like a very high atmospheric noise. I thought, "This is as bad as it gets!" Not so! Saturday evening was even worse! However, in truth, condx have been hot and cold the past week or so. Recently I was able to work 10 or 12 EU one night, but couldn't do squat the next. To wit: With OK1CF boiling in one night last week, I couldn't get his attention with the full legal limit. Then last evening he was much weaker, and he heard me the first time I called with 50 Watts. One thing I've learned in the 40 years of hard labor on 160, every time I tune the radio to 1.8 mHz., I expect to eat a hugh slice of humility pie. That's why I keep the little refrigerator near my ham desk. GL this weekend! Jim - WS6X > > > Today's Topics: > >1. Re: Topband: Condx for Stew Perry!
Hi Bob, You may have missed one important detail. In 2014 I moved to NW Rockingham County, Virginia. However, during my 30+ years on topband from my small city lot in Fresno, I worked 186 countries. One glorious evening in February - can't remember the year - I worked 17 EU. It took me until November of this year to beat that record, when I worked 19 EU the first evening of CQWW CW. So the 33 EU in one evening this weekend is pretty amazing for my little peanut whistle Inv-L!! 73, Jim - WS6X On Mon, Dec 31, 2018, 2:19 PM Chortek, Robert L. < robert.chor...@berliner.com wrote: > Wow! 33 EU stations. Re: Topband: Speaking of Noises...
Tim, Bill, thanks for posting the files. FWIW: I'm hearing it this evening on both 80 and 160. The sounds on both bands are essentially identical -- as far as this tired old audio engineer can discern. Now the kicker... in real time they sound almost nothing like the recording Tim forwarded. Perhaps if I slowed the playback to about 1/4 speed it would be closer. Still am hearing only 4 pulses. Next step is to listen with a wide bandwidth. Thanks all. Re: Topband: Formula
Do you have an antenna analyzer that measures the inductive reactance? That would be the easiest approach. Jim - WS6X Today's Date: Sun, 10 Dec 2017 16:05:53 -0500 From: "Gary Smith"I just installed a replacement wire for the 160 sloper. I made it 129' as was the earlier one that came down in the winds. I have to use a spud gun to get fishing line over the tree tops and where the spud lands, I connect the wire to the eye fastener & reel it to the radial plate. This time I had to use a different tree as the earlier one came down in the last hurricane. Now it is resonant at 1.785 and it is not a problem at the lower end of 160 but higher up it is. My problem is compounded in that I also use this antenna for 10M, 12M and the upper part of 15M. I need to shorten it for use on these as well. It is too far away to shorten the wire and solder a new eye on it and now it is too cold to play with it on the tree (have difficulty walking right now). So being too long, capacitance at the feed point might be my best answer. I have several fixed vacuum & doorknob capacitors of small pF to choose from that I can put in line. Is there a formula that I might plug data into to come up with the needed pF? Thanks & 73, Gary KA1J _ Topband Reflector Archives - http://www.contesting.com/_topband
