 turns out simply having a 9 day old google.com cookie gives you the free
 pass to the checkbox mode, no test needed, without any tracking or work on
 their end. maybe we should just collect google.com cookies and inject them
 into our TOR requests to bypass the checkbox and automate the whole
 process.

 Yes they are.
 But is this data sensitive at all? An onion service already knows this
 data (the service has generated these cookies). It's also not going to
 make these cookies playing role of selectors to track users. An onion
 service can do it by obseriving the set of IPs from which it was reached.

 In #8976, we blocked rendezvous from hidden services to private addresses.

 But the warning is log_warn LD_REND, when arma wonders if it should be a
 protocol warning to avoid excessive logging on busy services:
 {{{
   log_warn(LD_REND, "%s on circ %u", err_msg,
(unsigned)circuit->base_.n_circ_id);
 }}}

 There's also a whitespace issue we might as well fix while we're there:
 {{{
   if (err_msg_out) *err_msg_out = err_msg;
   else tor_free(err_msg);
 }}}

 Once upon a time, we expected onion addresses to be of the form x.y.onion,
 where we indeed put other things like authentication info in them.

 But we abandoned this design when we realized that client applications

 Right now if you're a relay and you try to post your descriptor and the
 dir auth rejects it, you get this in your logs:
 {{{
 log_warn(LD_GENERAL,"http status 400 (%s) response from "
  "dirserver '%s:%d'. Please correct.",
 }}}
 where the first %s comes from various possible choices in
 dirserv_get_status_impl(), e.g.
 {{{
   *msg = "Fingerprint is marked rejected";
 }}}
 or
 {{{
   *msg = "Tor version is insecure or unsupported. Please upgrade!";
 }}}

 We have been encountering cases lately where we want to get a message to a
 relay operator who is doing something scary (for example, running way too
 many relays) but who has not set any contactinfo. It would be neat to be
 able to customize our rejection message, for example to a more friendly
 one like "Wow, that's a lot of relays! Please contact us?"

Comment (by arma):

 The infrastructure is already in place for this on the relay end, so all
 we need is some config mechanism on the dir auth side.

 Would the world end if we just made the AuthDirReject line take more than
 one argument, and everything after the first argument is the message that
 we want to send along with the rejection?

 Can somebody improve on that design I hope? :)

 At the moment using authenticated onion services is really painful for a
 client. One need to find `torrc` somewhere, add a line to it and restart
 tor. These requirements are making them effectively usable.

 I got an idea to append authentication data directly to hostname. In order
 to avoid mixing with upcoming prop224 service ids there should be a
 separator. According to RFC 952 is is possible to use hyphen (`-`) in a
 hostname as this separator. So we have the following scheme:

 `s2mdezeof64lrcft.onion` - public onion
 `nf2kpynuymdd63wms6nkq5if4m-s2mdezeof64lrcft.onion` - authenticated onion
 As it is base32 there are only two bits left (instead of of 4 with base64)
 so we can encode two more auth types.

 I've implemented this idea for the client code (you have to convert
 descriptor cookie from base64 yourself for now). Please have a look at the
 patch attached.

 Noticable drawback:
   * Due to how client cache works for now, once intropoints are
 decrypted/not decrypted there will be cache entry that blocks auth data
 change.
This requires client cache rewrite to decrypt intropoints
at each request (make itstateless).

 It would be nice to hear any thoughts and comments on this.

 I didn't add an extra newline because the following lines are closely

 Arthur: Getting that one properly reviewed and tested should not prevent a
 new branch with all the rebase related fixes we can use for our nightlies.
 I can imagine just reverting the old SVG patch when we land the new one
 and just cutting the old one and the revert out when rebasing later to a
 new ESR45.

Comment (by atagar):

 Thanks for checking! Nope, Nyx should be happy. The current git repository
 doesn't have anything that cares about these units. The last release (arm
 1.4.5) does, but it
 [https://gitweb.torproject.org/nyx.git/tree/src/settings.cfg?h=release#n524
 recognizes both].

 On a personal note I like 'KB' more than 'KBytes' (former is a common unit
 you see everywhere, and the later is weird). If we want to standardize I'd
 go toward the former. But no concerns with breakage on my side.

 Yes, I kicked Tor Browser until the issues went away and I had all the

Comment (by arma):

 I'm not an orbot user, but, is the 'http' proxy setting just setting Tor's
 "HttpProxy" config option? If so, that's only used for vanilla directory
 connections, not for TLS connections, which explains why it didn't help
 you.

 For Tor Browser, we solved that in the interface by calling it "HTTP /
 HTTPS" for that option in the pull-down menu.

Comment (by n8fr8):

 If you install Orbot from the public F-Droid repo, then the key uses there
 is the F-Droid signing key, since they build Orbot from source.

 If you install Orbot from Google Play, the Guardian Project F-Droid repo,
 or the direct APK download, it will be signed with the Tor Project signing
 key.

 It is likely you switched from one stream to the other accidentally.

 A fixup patch is an additional patch that needs to be applied (on top of
 the older one).
 A revised or replacement patch supersedes an older patch.

 I forgot to mention that Page Info is still a hole / known issue. I am not
 sure if there is already an open ticket but we should open one if not.

 It isn't right to blame the guard in this case, but we should IMO actually
 say so.

 Sounds good. I pushed a fixup commit that adds a comment. :)

 [I change this ticket to "ready for merge". Hope that's a good way to use
 this feature.]

 What do all that mean? Where is the definition of that? Difference?
 Nevertheless, all of them have a lot of holes!

 Ah, it tests only the case where data extraction is falsely allowed,
 nevermind then. Adding Arthur into Cc for a second review.

Comment (by gk):

 Thanks, looks good to me. I was a bit confused by the `pointInPath()` and
 `pointIStroke()` buttons as the tests behind them always pass even if I
 don't have `Data Extraction Allowed` checked. Is that supposed to be this
 way?

Comment:

 Try Orfox.

 If you REALLY need to use firefox, make sure:
 network.proxy.socks_remote_dns = true
 network.proxy.socks = 127.0.0.1
 network.proxy.socks_port = 9050
 network.proxy.socks_version = 5
 and DO NOT set http proxy. Nothing else.

 This will happen if you set wrong proxy type to Orbot(like HTTP != HTTPS).

 1. Take a log on proxy server side.
 2. Start Orbot.
 3. If Orbot's access doesn't appear on proxy server log, it's your fault.
 Check your network.

 See bug_18466_v2 () in my public torbutton repo for review. I added an
 additional commit to Arthur's two which looked good to me fwiw. mcs: I
 don't think we need to do something special to avoid a branch here. master
 will be used for the next alpha and that one is going to be ESR45 based.
 So, everything is fine. Regarding your other question I defer to Arthur.

 As with the `TESTING_TOR_BINARY` change, the tor-gencert dependency should
 include `top_builddir` and `EXEEXT`.

 Note that this dependency currently only works because the test-network
 script does not use tor-cov-gencert binary when in coverage mode (see
 #18737).

[tor-bugs] #18754 [Tor Sysadmin Team]: Please configure and enable mod_deflate for onionoo.torproject.org on omeiense

2016-04-07 Thread Tor Bug Tracker & Wiki
#18754: Please configure and enable mod_deflate for onionoo.torproject.org on
omeiense

 Context: So far, the Jetty process running on port 8080 where Apache was
 forwarding requests was previously deflating responses using the following
 filter:

 {{{

 GzipFilter
 org.eclipse.jetty.servlets.GzipFilter

   mimeTypes
   text/html,text/xml,text/plain,application/json

   excludedAgents
   gozilla,traviata

   minGzipSize
   2048

 GzipFilter
 /*

 }}}

 But I fear that this caused problems in combination with Apache's
 `mod_cache` module (see #18663 for details if you care a whole lot). I
 want to try moving all response post-processing to Apache, which would
 include compression and caching.

 Can we build something similar as the Jetty filter above (not necessarily
 the exact same thing) using Apache's `mod_deflate` module?

 This might also apply to HiddenServicePort and the control port ADD_ONION
 command.

 Tor does not handle quotes when parsing *Port configuration lines, and
 uses only the first space-separated part of the value as the port. It's
 not possible to have a unix socket in a path containing spaces.

 A second related bug: Tor does not error when garbage flags are included
 at the end of a *Port configuration line.

 Latest Orbot on F-Droid is signed by different key.
 When tried to upgrade, F-Droid urge user to delete Orbot to install
 the latest one.

 Why do you change key?

 Proxy Type;
 If I input "HTTP" (no ") for HTTP Proxy, Orbot fails to connect it.
 If I input "HTTPS", Orbot connect to (tor node IP):443 via proxy, as
 expected.

 Conclusion:
 Just remove "HTTP". Or, make a radio selection menu, like

 (_) None
 (O) HTTPS
 (_) SOCKS4
 (_) SOCKS5
