Comment (by teor):

The existing code from 0.2.8 will behave the right way once IPv6 addresses
are moved into the microdesc consensus.

It checks addresses in this order:
 * routerinfo / descriptor / rewrite bridge address
 * routerstatus / consensus
 * microdesc

There are some minor changes needed to IPv6-only bootstrap (skipping the
special case where the IPv6 microdescs come from fallbacks).

We should probably revise node_get_pref_ipv6_orport() so that it's a bit
smarter, but let's do that in a different ticket.

It is building a tor `expert-bundle` for Linux and Mac. However, it is
using the same directory names as when included in Tor Browser, and maybe
 we want to change that:

 "Gah. Your tab just crashed.

Choose Restore This Tab to reload page content. "

Tor browser worked for two days and then began to crash immediately upon
loading a clearnet web page. I could not get any of the Tor web site
pages to load or the reddit site but I was able to get DDW and DDG
 clearnet pages to load.

This same issue initially occurred 6 days ago so I uninstalled Tor and
reinstalled it. And as you can read from above, same behavior. I am
running windows 10 pro, ipVanish, and Tor's bundle NoScript, HTTPS
 everywhere.

Just now I launched Tor browser again and was able to read Tor web site. i
went to reddit and read several pages. Clicked on a link in the reddit
thread to another reddit topic and Tor browser crashed.

I don't know what to do to get a usable version of Tor browser. I am using
 7.0.6.

 Thanks.

Yes, it happens in #21969 and children. There seem to be a few root
causes, so it's plausible that they could cause this bug,

Setting parent to #21969, so we close this when it closes.

Moving ed ids to the consensus means we can eventually remove them from
microdescs, stop voting on NoEdConsensus, and just drop them from the
 consensus when they're wrong.

Hey there folks! I'm happy to report that we did a lot of work on the
draft code of conduct at the Montreal meeting. If you want to be involved
in finishing this up before it goes out to a vote among core contributors,
please contact me directly at alison (at) torproject (dot) org. I'd paste
a link to the draft here if this wasn't such a lightning rod for jerks!

Comment:

proposal: remove tcmalloc and openbsd malloc, add jemalloc and enable by
 default on Linux if installed.

 pros compared to ptmalloc2:

 - moderately decreased CPU usage (#23777)
 - slightly decreased memory usage (fragmentation is much less bad in 0.3.2
already, but jemalloc still does better by default)

 pros compared to openbsd malloc:

 - remove dead code
 - code path will be actually tested (unlike with openbsd malloc)
 - jemalloc is actually maintained by distributions and -ljemalloc is a
standard method of overriding glibc. this way will continue to work,
 unlike just defining functions

 cons:

 - if always-on, adds an extra prerequisite. if used only when available,
 might cause more Linux-only bugs
 - glibc does slightly more runtime checks, but AFAIK these are almost
 entirely useless for security
 - might be fingerprintable? seems highly unlikely, and would also apply to
 other OSes

Comment (by nickm):

Hm. We could easily just change the warning to end "Optimistically marking
[any] stalled directory downloads as retryable" ?

And we could change "Application request" to better describe whether it's
a user request or an internally-generated stream?

This looks, maybe, like some kind of crazy deadlock where we can't
download directory info without circuits, and we can't open circuits
without directory info? Did we have one of those recently?

Which hashtable do you mean? The outbuf_table hashtable is stack-

 and shouldn't be freed.

I think instead we should HT_CLEAR() the socket_table hashtable. How

Comment:

At the dev meeting I discussed this with Roger, Tim, and others.
Conclusion was that this consensus capability has never been used and
they'd prefer not to use it in its present form for a couple reasons...

 * Every application version bump would require engaging at least three
authority operators, making more work for them.

 * Roger is worried about a proliferation of applications we list in the
 consensus.

 * Tim is concerned about the extra size this would add to the consensus.
It's not large, but by residing in every consensus download is something
 to consider.

As such rather than taking advantage of this capability I'm gonna check
CollecTor to see if this capability has ever been used in a vote. If not
we'll remove this from the dir-spec and I'll file a ticket for it to be
 removed from Tor.

Anyone who prefers to use oniongit can review this as part of the merge
 request that we created there:

These changes are closely related to the #23262 changes, so it would be
best to test all three patches together (Kathy and I split the #23262

Alright, I made a start in updating the README

needed that `r-cran-[r]java` package, and I ran into issues with JSTL
packages being missing in Stretch that were still present in Jessie.

iwakeh, did you succeed in setting up a metrics-web instance? If so, can
you resolve that JSTL mystery? If not, can you try setting up an instance
and, erm, resolve that JSTL mystery? ;) If not, I'll give it another try
 another time.

Looks good! Rephrasing a tiny bit for uniform style and to avoid the ":"
notation that is only used for qualified search terms:

"Return only relays with a domain name ending in the given (partial) host
name. ''Searches for subdomains of a specific domain should ideally be
prefixed with a period, for example: ".csail.mit.edu".'' Non-ASCII host
name characters must be encoded as punycode. Filtering by host name is
 case-insensitive."

Obviously, feel free to use your description for Atlas where instructions
are more user-facing and where qualified search terms are the only way to
 even use this parameter.

Comment (by irl):

That description looks good to me functionally. (:

It might be useful to also add a tip to users:

To search only for subdomains of a specific domain, prefix your search
string with a period, for example: "host_name:.csail.mit.edu".

Okay, we're not doing anything with lookup responses, so let's say:
"Return only relays with a domain name ending in the given (partial) host
name. ''Non-ASCII host name characters must be encoded as punycode.''
Filtering by host name is case-insensitive." Please tweak as necessary!
 Thanks!

Comment (by irl):

The punycode version *is* the ASCII version, and should be what we get
from doing a lookup unless we've explicitly done some IDN conversion.

 https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3492.txt

 > "ASCII characters in the Unicode string are represented literally, and
non-ASCII characters are represented by ASCII characters that are allowed
in host name labels (letters, digits, and hyphens)."

Here are the first few after pushing the change. So far there are users
from Canada (that was us testing), Morocco, Russia, Taiwan, the United
States, and Turkey. The numbers are rounded to a multiple of 8, so `8` can
be anything between 1 and 8. There are still some `??` entries—maybe those
are from the JavaScript proxy, where we haven't pushed the updated code
 yet.

Comment (by karsten):

Aha, right, we should avoid confusions there. However, wouldn't we also
have to encode domain names that we look up to punycode ourselves in order
to say that? Could we limit this parameter to ASCII characters? Or would
that be too much of a hack?

That would be (with new parts in italics): "Return only relays with a
domain name ending in the given (partial) host name. ''Only ASCII
characters are supported as host names.'' Filtering by host name is case-
 insensitive."

Looks good to me. Applied to `tor-browser-52.4.0esr-7.5-1` (commits

 b4fc15a8986a8d2c8267df281b526eafb58bf6d7).

The patches are straight forward so I applied them as well to `tor-
browser-52.4.0esr-7.0-1` to get the crash fixed in 7.0.7 as well (commits
 d3222cf5469b28bfb2b018055693d94254df9cd2 and
 00c8f9b86215e26a2a9785be4a45e8a2d652e224).

Please test the FPI, though. We might have time to revert things in the
unlikely case FPI is broken. Leaving the ticket open for that part.

We should say that Unicode must be encoded as punycode, for the avoidance

 Alright, let's do it.

How about we add a new parameter "host_name" with the following
specification: "Return only relays with a domain name ending in the given
(partial) host name. Filtering by host name is case-insensitive."

 Please review
 [https://gitweb.torproject.org/user/karsten/onionoo.git/log/?h=task-16553
my task-16553 branch] with an implementation.

Requires a minor protocol version bump when merging, because it adds a new
 parameter.

Comment (by daisy407):

You need to set condition in LDAP for https that set https everywhere
 before www. in a URL.
I am not a programmer, I'm an experienced

quite sure that you can use this condition wherever you want.

onion-routing connections but that the directory authorities failed to
confirm as reachable. Addresses are in arbitrary order. IPv6 hex
characters are all lower-case. Omitted if empty." If you can think of
specifying this more clearly, please feel free to suggest a better text.
And if you can think of a better way to include this data, just state it
 here.
 >

 > * claims to accept onion-routing connections in its descriptor

Sure, we can add the "in its descriptor" part.

 > * the directory authorities failed to confirm as reachable. (If a relay
has an unreachable IPv4 address, the relay is removed from the consensus.
If a relay has an unreachable IPv6 address, the relay is included in the
 consensus without the IPv6 address.)

Yes, let's try to add that. Maybe we can make the distinction between
primary and additional addresses rather than IPv4 and IPv6, just in case
it will be possible to use an IPv6 address as primary address or an IPv4
address as additional address in the future.

 > This is how things will work when authorities upgrade to 0.3.3, assuming
we merge the IPv6 fixes in #20916.

Hmm, can you elaborate how either the upgrade or the bugfix will affect us
 here?

In any case, here's the edited specification with additional parts being
 written in italics:

"Array of IPv4 or IPv6 addresses and TCP ports or port lists where the
relay claims ''in its descriptor'' to accept onion-routing connections but
that the directory authorities failed to confirm as reachable. ''Contains
only additional addresses of a relay that are found unreachable, whereas
relays with an unreachable primary address are excluded entirely.''
Addresses are in arbitrary order. IPv6 hex characters are all lower-case.
 Omitted if empty."

Please continue editing or suggesting as necessary!

 > > Regarding the suggested flag, I believe that that shouldn't be a relay
flag like the existing ones, but it could be a custom notification like
Atlas adds for relays running an non-recommended version. In other words,
that's for Atlas land, not Onionoo land. Hope that matches your idea. If
 not, please elaborate.
 >
 > Sounds good to me.
 > This will help us prompt operators when their IPv6 is broken.

 Sounds great!

Comment (by arthuredelstein):

 Replying to [comment:10 gk]:
 > Another thought I had: it might be a good idea to take the old Tor
Browser version Mike used back then for testing where he realized that
IndexedDB related data is not getting deleted on `New Identity`. Just to
be sure we are testing the same thing and it is indeed fixed now but not
 in the old Tor Browser.

Good idea. I tested the indexedDB demo at
 https://codepen.io/caraya/pen/xVrXrG
 with "browser.privatebrowsing.autostart" set to false
 using our build at
 https://archive.torproject.org/tor-package-archive/torbrowser/5.0a3/tor-
 browser-linux64-5.0a3_en-US.tar.xz
which is the same TBB version that was available when Mike posted
 ticket:16528#comment:11.

I confirmed that New Identity does not clear the indexedDB database in
 that version.

I also re-ran the experiment in comment:8 and confirmed that New Identity
clears indexedDB in the latest Tor Browser.

So here are two patches for review: https://github.com/arthuredelstein
 /tor-browser/commits/23745

Although I could see evidence of FPI in comment:8, I haven't directly
observed it. I will write code to test that tomorrow. I'm pretty confident
FPI is happening, though, given the filenames I observed and also by
confirmation from Mozilla folks, so if there isn't time to wait for that
test, I would suggest trying it in the alpha anyway.

Comment (by karsten):

Yes, this is something we'd like to provide.

Couple of questions regarding a possible implementation:
  - What formats and versions should we provide? I'm not using RSS/Atom
feeds myself, so I can't say what's most useful. Nor can I say what
formats one would provide when starting to provide a feed today. So, would
we want RSS or Atom or both or something else? And which version or
versions would we want to provide?
  - Are there specific parts of news that we should include, and are there
ways to provide data in ways that are easier (or unnecessarily harder) to
 process for feed clients?
  - Are there (implicit) conventions regarding feed URLs? For example,
should we provide the RSS feed for
 `https://metrics.torproject.org/news.html` under something like
`https://metrics.torproject.org/news.rss`, or are there no such
 conventions?
  - What do people usually use as library for creating feeds in Java? A
quick search reveals [https://rometools.github.io/rome/ ROME] as possible
candidate: "ROME is a Java framework for RSS and Atom feeds. It's open
source and licensed under the Apache 2.0 license." But I have no idea if
I'm overlooking an obviously better library.

Thanks for any input on these questions. Any (useful) answers on these
will speed up the implementation process.
