 I was using Tor browser, but even after shutting it down and
 'deactivating' the Torbirdy extension in Thunderbird and attempting to
 fetch emails it failed. I kept the Torbirdy extension disabled...then as a
 test restarted Tor, and it fetched emails successfully. I understood that
 disabling an extension in Thunderbird was enough to turn off this feature.

 TorBirdy requires that you have Tor running, whether through Tor Browser
 or the Tor daemon. So if you closed Tor Browser, you won't be able to use
 TorBirdy. The [wiki:torbirdy#TorBirdy wiki] has more information about
 this.

 Does that answer your question or did I misunderstand?

 Just installed Thunderbird 60.0b10 and re-installed Torbirdy. After
 disabling it and shutting down Tor browser (OSX) I noticed that TB was not
 fetching any emails. Verified that Torbirdy was in fact disabled in add-
 ons. When I re-started Tor browser and tried again, it then fetched emails
 as normal. Restarted all applications and Mac, but problem persists.
