Comment:

 This doesn't look like a security issue, so I don't think we need to fix
 it in 0.4.2.

 The behaviour is always the same after restarting a Tor process. The
 values are the same. They do start with few MB - when I start Nyx
 immediately after restarting the Tor process - and after few minutes -
 when I restart Nyx - the spike is about 3 GB.

 This could indeed be the case. The issue is not seen immediately after
 restarting the Tor process, after a while I do have a spike of 100 MB,
 after a little bit longer while I do have the 3 GB.

Comment:

 If we can't reproduce these issues on older Tor versions, that makes it
 hardrr for us to diagnose this issue,

 Here's how I think we can move forward:
 * set an "unreasonably large" bandwidth amount threshold, and log a BUG()
 warning when:
   * we try to add an amount over that threshold,
   * any of our totals are over that threshold, or
   * we try to put an amount over that threshold in our descriptor, extra-
 info, or control port.
 * when we subtract a bandwidth value, log a BUG() if the final amount
 would be less than zero.

 (We recently added code that subtracts bandwidth values if the circuit is
 closed before writing.)

 BUG() warnings log stack traces, so we should be able to locate the source
 of the issue more easily.

 I can confirm this under 0.4.1.x at a stable hardened Gentoo and at
 0.4.0.5 at a Debian 10 system. I do not run relays with older Tor
 versions.

Comment:

 Marking as security-low, because this issue could be:
 * reading uninitialised values,
 * unsigned int underflow, or
 * some other calculation error.

 We do expect some spikes for bandwidth self-tests and consensus downloads,
 but a 3 GB spike is unexpected.

 We recently did a refactor of this code.
 Does the issue occur in 0.2.9 or 0.3.5?

 Discussing with atagar an issue with the bandwidth graph of Nyx yield into
 the fact, that Tor reports 1 or 2 unusal high values when nyx is started.
 After a minute or so the effect is gone and Nyx can scale the y-axis to a
 reasonable value.

 atagar found out, that there are 1 or 2 spike values in it (look for

 Just a guess: The 2 affected relays have about 20 - 40 MByte/sec bw. The
 spike values are often above 3,000,000,000, looking like an arbitrary
 unsigned long int.

 Whilst the severity on the Nyx graph is negligible I do wonder about the
 root cause.
