which I have plugged a USB drive that drive becomes a network drive that
can be seen and used by any computer on the network.

Yes. But please note that it will not replace a NAS with all its features.
There's no access control, no shares besides the music folder etc.

It is reasonable to expect limitations, the Touch is pretty small, and
has limited resources. I would not expect all the plug-ins.

From the responses and other threads in this forum I understand that
the Touch can act as a server for the Duet.
So am I right when I conclude that I can replace my Duet receiver by
the Touch (with CPU onboard) and can use the Duet controller

Yes, that is a major point of it.
Its complete as is. Put your music on a thumb drive, or USB external
disk and be happy

I have chosen for a disk station (Synology 107+ with SSODS).
Somehow I have the feeling that things can be simplified.

Looks like the Squeezebox Touch is something for me (Good thing it is
almost Christmas).
Besides my music collection I only listen to internet radio stations. I
don't need all the other services.

Depends on what you mean by this as the Touch will stream to a
Receiver just fine.
If you mean that the Receiver is too dumb
Does the USB input support FLAC files or is it compressed formats only.

You can have any natively supported format on the drive, including FLAC, WAV,
etc.
