i am using ubuntu gnome 14.10 on a medion akoya netbook dual boot with win 8.1.
The sound worked fine until i plugged headphones in for the first time - then
it got stuck in headphones mode.
In settings there is only headphones for output devices and a little heaphones
symbol in the volume bar.

on Unity, so it is not a desktop related problem (KDE, Unity, etc)
The later comments just state that Debian Unstable works, and since

booting the builtin speaker does not work. But once the computer had
been in standby (suspend) mode to save power, the sound works.

Previously lightdm.conf would allow configuration of multiple instances
of the the display manager across multiple instances of the X server,
using [Seat:num] section headers. These semantics could be used for
multiseat setup as well as for using different virtual terminals
Yes - have a look at the network-manager-logind.patch that's attached to
this bug. That can be applied directly to /etc/init/network-
manager.conf, it just adds a pre-start section to the init script.

Sometimes, few minutes after log-in, Ubuntu freezes. Everything
including mouse is frozen and only switch to tty1 and return to
Unity/KDE helps.

I just had this happen on my Desktop running a nearly fresh ( 5 days)
install of 14.10 64bit. It has been on for 1 day and 6 hours when this

I am trying to install lubuntu 13.10 on an IBM X40. (Installing 14.04 LTS gives
a similar error, but the log file here is from 13.10.)
The process aborts while installing upstart-bin, complaining:

Looks like it is a lacking feature in the kernel: it does not perform
any translation on filenames, so if they are in some specific code page
and you want them to show up right on the terminal, then you need to
configure the terminal to display using that code page rather than utf8.
