I think that's correct. The AST2500 looks like only a 2D graphics chip
and isn't a "GPU". So Xorg needs to use software rendering there.

FWIW, I ran into that issue today as well, and it was really annoying. So I
fixed in in Debian in a generic way, so this should work for every container
solution out there.
It requires systemd-detect-virt (systemd) to be installed prior to installing
makedev though (which usually is the case).
I wasn't getting any colour glitches, just sections of th screen that
weren't getting updated, might be a different bug

The driver works properly. However, the configuration is what's at issue
(therefore an apt problem). The configuration that's forcible enforced
in the xorg.conf.d directory doesn't take into account that some devices
have dual video cards. My issue was that there is an onboard Intel video

This is a workstation with AST2500 onboard GPU. It should be used to do
the graphics rendering, while the NVIDIA cards are for HPC purposes.
Nvidia driver is installed with --no-opengl-files option.
libegl-mesa0 package did not solve the issue as described in earlier bug
The update is still in Debian/experimental and require a transition

Unsure if it's worth trying to do in Ubuntu before Debian though

This issue still appears on Ubuntu 18.04.
The variant "options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1 probe_mask=1 model=dell-
headset-multi" doesn't work and the Pin override with hdajackretask
doesn't work neither.

No, just the output format as is makes more sense than the suggestions:
* pkg/release is valid syntax that can be passed to commands (even /now is
valid)
* it's a list command, so it should not perform a search
* showsrc is a very old name, it's not going to change.
