both cases, ureadahead messages appeared all over the place in the
system log.
When I did this under Ubuntu 18.04 Desktop prior, I had over 250,000

That is unfortunately not a bug.
Only an old fashioned CRT can run multiple resolutions and have them of
equal sharpness. If you are using an LCD then you must use its native
resolution 3840x2160 (or integer factors of it like 1920x1080) in order
to keep a sharp picture.

Ooops. Ignore the previous post. Those were the wrong instructions.
These are the correct ones:
1. Install fresh copy of Ubuntu.
2. Install printer-driver-cups-pdf.
3. Change cups-pdf's output directory in /etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf to some
directory outside of the user's home directory, and that
I was checking for my own log messages I was writing and found this:
$ journalctl -b | grep eyesome | grep ureadahead
Oct 07 11:15:25 alien ureadahead[289]: ureadahead:acpi-lid-event-eyesome:

I found this bug report and ran the recommended check:
$ journalctl -b | grep
1. Install fresh copy of Ubuntu.
2. Make sure ~/PDF does not exist.
3. Install printer-driver-cups-pdf.
4. Attempt to print using CUPS PDF.
5. Notice the DENIED error in dmesg, and the lack of a ~/PDF directory.
6. Notice that cups-pdf lacks an apparmor profile of it's own and is
stored
Indeed it has been fixed.
