I encountered the same issue recently and attempted to build systemd from
source and patch the retry behavior from #24906, but I failed to make it work.

I just found a usb flash key with my last installation (from a daily
image) from a few days ago, and it does not have a line for that
dtoverlay at all (neither fkms nor kms).
This line seems to have appeared on the official release.

Currently in "Settings -> Displays" I can set it to "duplicate" or "joined".
