In cups-filters one could introduce a filter named oldcairopdftopdf to
be run before pdftopdf if the incoming PDF is from a too old Cairo
version. One could introduce a new MIME type to make CUPS detect such

installing. It seems to be some coincidence or a bug in apt or so. What
also gives the impression that the password prompts are not caused by
the package is that after the package had finished to install and the
prompt came back

I checked a stock Vivid with Ghostscript 9.15 now and calling
gs appout
errors. This problem does not occur any more with Ghostscript 9.16 as it
will be used in Wily.
Calling evince leads to a crash, meaning that evince cannot cope with
Ghostscript erroring out, which is another bug.

printer using HPLIP. You are also able to print it with HPLIP (+
proprietary plugin downloaded by hp-plugin). The problem is most

So most probably this is not a CUPS bug as the files missing do not
belong to CUPS. The bug is probably caused by whatever package which
contains the program which removes the files. As the files belong to
snakeoil I add a snakeoil task, perhaps the maintainer of snakeoil knows

The problem is probably caused by a wrong filter sequence. error_log
contains:
