I'm marking this as Invalid, since we've established that with a current version of ca-certificates, the connection is fine. I don't know how backports are done in Ubuntu, since I work primarily in Debian and just look at bug reports in launchpad from time to time. I imagine that if you install the 14.10 package version of ca-certificates on 14.04 you should be just fine.
