I have the same thing and I'm running kubuntu 14.10 (although I also had it
when I was running 14.04.)
When I try to do the initctl mentioned above I get this:
root# initctl restart indicator-application
initctl: Unknown job: indicator-application
I also noticed that it appears that a lot of

Ok when I turn on my laptop this morning suddenly all the icons
appeared so I think it must have helped.

Is any application indicator running there?
Try to run:
initctl start indicator-application
Or (if it was running)
initctl restart indicator-application

Hi Andrea,
Yes it should be. I just tried to mark pre-released updates under
Software and Updates and did a upgrade. When I login after reboot
the problem persist. Insync is giving me the notification It seems
that another insync app is currently running. Will quit now.
