I am using 14.04, and have the same issue. It seems to have started within the
last week, possibly after some updates, but I am not 100% sure of that.
I have not changed any setting recently.

In the other bug I had mentioned that 'xset 500 ' worked fine
to turn off my screen as I want.

Oh, didn't notice your system was 14.04. We've been seeing almost the
same exact bugs coming in for 14.10.
That said, I still don't think this is a Unity issue as Unity doesn't
have anything to do with turning off the screen. Unfortunately, I'm not
sure which package to file this under. It
