I just plug in the VGA cable. The external monitor is detected acc.to dmesg.
A USB mouse works OK.
The problem lies somewhere with synaptic driver.

Oops, why does apport add each file as a separate comment? Anyways, this
last report happened with VGA monitor plugged in and the same behaviour
exhibited as in the OP.

Dan Smith, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
