Public bug reported:

error installing while updating from Synaptic Package Manager. Possible
other factors: Lots of updates as this particular install of Ubuntu
hasn't been updated at all for maybe 10 months. Thus far nothing has
crashed, system is still usable. Ubuntu install was created when HD was
internal primary, now I am booting off it as a secondary connected via
USB dock. It is now September 24, 2015, computer suffered serious
problems back in January 2015 resulting in the curruption of several
drives and OS's. RAM had to be removed, and DVD drive had to be
replaced along with several fans and the MOBO itself. This drive was
disconnected early on and should be mostly safe, but ... there could be
some damage to the fs from back in January. Otherwise it seems to be
running okay though. Currently using Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS.
