Seems to be caused by the custom boot loader I'm using, it unpacked the files into a subdirectory in the pen drive. During configuration of the initramfs-tools I get the error "cp: cannot create regular file ‘/cdrom/casper/initrd.gz.new’: No such file or directory" -- You received this bug

The Pi 2 build of UBuntu MATE is not supported by Canonical. It is a community supported build. It currently uses the Linux kernel provided by the Raspberry Pi foundation, which is provided as a binary only. Please raise this discussion over at the Ubuntu MATE community. *
