the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu.
This is a significant bug
According to my tests backports are needed for 12.04 LTS (Precise) and
14.04 LTS (Trusty).
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with 3.2 kernel reports the following:
[drm:intel_dp_i2c_aux_ch] *ERROR* too many retries, giving up
[drm:gen6_sanitize_pm] *ERROR* Power management discrepancy:
Norbert, would you need a backport to a release prior to Yakkety, or may
this be closed as Status Invalid?

Sometimes I get
I have no such messages on 16.10 live session (tested with
yakkety-desktop-i386.iso10-Jul-2016 08:35, MD5
e5bbe3a90fb7aaf98b0371effc008d3b).
Now I'm trying to install 16.10 with mini.iso (normal does not install on my 8
GB flash - see bug 1600594).
