Does it ever "recover" from the black screen? Note it may take a minute
or two, but it should finally go away.
Can you clear /var/crash/* and try again, see if there's a .crash file
of unity8 in there after logging out?

I can't see an explanation in the logs bug we do know that due to bug
1535297, Unity8 does crash on logout every time. That doesn't usually
cause a freeze and black screen though.
