With the latest kernel update Linux 4.10.0-24-generic the issue seems
resolved.
Installing tlp -> Suspend to RAM works (at least from what I see in the
system log)

ubuntu budgie suspend to ram fails on Macbook Pro R
Might be TLP related - to test, enable ubuntu budgie backports via
budgie-welcome recommendations.
Do a full update. Then uninstall tlp. This will also uninstall the UB
meta package "ubuntu-budgie-desktop" - dont worry about that. Before
you upgrade to 17.10 just reinstall that package.

Was a bit euphoric about the workaround.
Suspend does not work even with pm-utils installed.
The machine blanks the display but other than that works continuously.
With the lid closed, the laptop might overheat. So this issue is
endangering the hardware.
