I'm trying to pick up the kernel update using the -proposed method at
the URL you provided.
I added this line to the sources.list ...

Good news! We got a test window on the Ubuntu KVM host today.
We provisioned a collection of 24 new virtual Ubuntu guests for this
test. Each virtual domain uses a single qcow2 virtual boot volume. All

FWIW, I checked on my system and the aio-nr only increases for disks with
io='native' (libvirt) or aio='native' (qemu command line)
QEMU does an io_setup of 128 events per disk. But with current kernels
