"out of range" doesn't mean it's the wrong resolution. It means that you've specified some frequencies/values that the monitor can't support, or isn't meant to support in case they cause damage.
It's unclear to me if this is a bug in Xorg, a faulty monitor, or just a misunderstanding. ** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => xorg-server (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1777633 Title: Xorg Out of Range with VGA native resolution Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: This bug is related to Bug 1777621 with 17.10 pg@pg-desktop:~$ xrandr Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2304 x 1024, maximum 8192 x 8192 VGA-1 connected primary 1024x768+1280+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 60.00* 800x600 60.32 56.25 848x480 60.00 640x480 59.94 HDMI-1 connected 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 376mm x 301mm 1280x1024 60.02*+ 76.00 75.02 72.05 1152x864 75.00 1024x768 75.03 70.07 60.00 832x624 74.55 800x600 72.19 75.00 60.32 640x480 75.00 72.81 66.67 59.94 720x400 70.08 640x350 70.07 HDMI-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 1280x1024_60.00 (0x120) 109.000MHz -HSync +VSync h: width 1280 start 1368 end 1496 total 1712 skew 0 clock 63.67KHz v: height 1024 start 1027 end 1034 total 1063 clock 59.89Hz pg@pg-desktop:~$ xrandr --newmode 1280x1024_40.00 69.75 1280 1336 1472 1664 1024 1025 1028 1048 -HSync +Vsync pg@pg-desktop:~$ xrandr --verbose --addmode VGA-1 1280x1024_40.00 pg@pg-desktop:~$ xrandr --verbose --output VGA-1 --mode 1280x1024_40.00 screen 0: 2560x1024 677x271 mm 95.98dpi crtc 0: 1280x1024_40.00 40.00 +1280+0 "VGA-1" pg@pg-desktop:~$ => VGA-1 Out of Range!
