Thanks, Stephen, culprit found. The systemd cgroup was yours - until
you did a sudo.
For now you can work around this by commenting out the libpam-cgfs line
from /etc/pam.d/common-session-noninteractive. Then re-chown your
current systemd cgroup to yourself or log back in.

I solved that noise enabling Intel Smart Sound in BIOS.
Before Ubuntu boots, press the 'Esc' key, then go to 'BIOS setup' -> 'Advanced'
-> 'Built-In Options' -> ' Intel Smart Sound'.
Exit and save changes.

Tested the proposed version 1.0.1ubuntu2.12 in Mint 17.3 (which is based on
Trusty and uses apt package as is, from Trusty repos).

The problem is seemingly reduced in xenial now with the new visual
design. But the problem is not eliminated.
Fonts in the indicator pulldown (on desktop) are still not very well pixel
aligned. At a guess, it looks like we might have made any of these mistakes:
(a) Insufficient hinting

window title text overlaps
The file /home/olle/linux/drivers/acpi/video.c is missing.
- Is it because of the failed git command?
- Or does the git command fail because it was missing when the file
should have been there (put there by previous git commands)?
- Must I install source code before running the git command? How
I tried this, and got apt-get running back successfully.
sudo apt-get remove libc6-amd64:i386 libc6-dev-amd64:i386
