This problem hasn't been reported for other devices. Are there any
differences in the dbus setup for this device that would explain the
dbus service failing to stop? What else can you tell us about the state
of the upstart jobs at this point?

Ok, we've confirmed that this bug can be fixed by applying the patch to
xfsettingsd from jkampe68 as highlighted in this XFCE Bugzilla bug :

I didn't include an Xmir stack trace yesterday because it didn't appear
stuck, it was submitting buffers (black frames) repeatedly.
I compiled Xmir and added some logs. I caught swap_buffers blocking up
in Xmir (in the pocket desktop scenario only, seems to be a racy,
perhaps on how big the frame
Switching away from Unity (and Ubuntu). This should be of high
priority...especially because there is no launcher menu or other alternative to
find your app.

My workaround is as I explained in the issue description: I added a
script in /etc/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/ folder which performs
`vgchange -ay`.
