assuming there's no particular requirement that the selected dir is
world-writeable like /tmp and /var/tmp (or at least there doesn't seem
to be in my setup?)

Just ran into this issue on a fresh install of 19.10 with all updates
installed as of 2019/11/30. The lock icon in the menu is missing and the
keyboard shortcut is non-functional. The Screen Lock dialog in settings
is greyed out entirely.

While this is a bug in WSL's ELF loader I located to problem in
binutil's strip and after the fix passed my testing I'll send it

I just upgraded from 16.04 to 18.04 and I'm seeing the same/similar
issue. I have the same messages in the log, and I have an encrypted
home folder.
When I *first* try to log in after a reboot, I get bounced back to the
login screen. It then logs in on the second attempt (so far - but this
