This only happens with latest unity-scope-shell (trunk). One of the latest changes to the shell plugin re-executes search in Ubuntu store when packages are installed or removed, and this triggers this bug, but only when removing scopes. Steps to reproduce: 1. Make sure youtube scope is installed. 2. Go to Ubuntu Store - Music Audio department 3. Scroll to bottom, find youtube scope in the Store results. Click it to get the preview. 4. In the preview, click Uninstall and confirm. 5. When uninstall completes, click the back arrow at the top (that should take you back to search results). The following error appears in unity8-dash.log: unity::scopes::MiddlewareException: Cannot invoke operations while middleware is stopped unexpected exception in add_reply_object(): basic_string::_S_create unity8-dash: /build/buildd/unity-scopes-api-0.6.6+14.10.20140916/src/scopes/internal/AbstractObject.cpp:58: void unity::scopes::internal::AbstractObject::disconnect(): Assertion `disconnect_func_' failed. I wasn't able to get a backtrace of this crash - gdb either gives me 3 corrupted frames, or hangs. It only crashes when uninstalling scope (doesn't crash for apps). ** Branch linked: lp:ubuntu/utopic-proposed/indicator-sound -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to indicator-sound in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1368827 Title: [FFe] [touch] indicator needs to be able to control volume per audio role Status in “indicator-sound” package in Ubuntu: In Progress Bug description: Dear Release Team, I would like to request a FFe for indicator-sound, in order to deliver the remaining features needed for Ubuntu Touch. From the Sound design for Touch (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sound#Phone), we need to change the default behaviour of the indicator in order to be able to change volume per audio roles, and not only the master volume. On touch the master volume will always be at 100%, and each media role will have its own volume values, so we can have a different volume level for multimedia, ringtone and alarms. This can be done using the streamrestore module in pulseaudio (via another dbus entry point that is only enabled on touch atm): http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Documentation/Developer/Clients/DBus/StreamRestore/ There's also a sample script on python that can be used to set/get volume per roles: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/jusa/pulseaudio-utils/master/pasr.py And the current roles supporter by touch are: multimedia, alert, phone and alarm. This change is touch specific as it needs a combination of configs that are available in ubuntu-touch-session for it to be used (different code path that only gets used on touch). Hello Eleni, Thanks for the reply, I haven't set keyboard shortcuts. In order to reproduce the bug I go to dektop click on an empty space on desktop then click the menu keyboard button between alt-gr and rctrl (at least on my keyboard). The menu that opens is the same as right click menu and if I click to menu button again a menu in screenshot opens. If I click close then almost all my shortcuts gots disabled I can't click with mouse I get almost no response except for ctrl+alt+fx shortcuts and the help menu shortcut which is holding windows. I hope the screenshot and information helps :) ** Attachment added: 10723304_10203863498202416_49506758_n.jpg https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1373345/+attachment/4223423/+files/10723304_10203863498202416_49506758_n.jpg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to unity in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1373345 Title: Clicking on windows and continuingly pressing menu key on keyboard opens infinite windows and locks all keyboard/mouse clicks Status in Unity: New Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: The bug happens when I clicked on desktop and pressed menu bar but pressed too many times and many alignment windows opened on top of right click window. Re: [Touch-packages] [Bug 1376548] [NEW] service slapd stop fails
The failure to stop was consistent. There was no logging, consistent with the successful exit code triggered by --oknodo. Experimentation showed that --exec was failing and it was because /proc/$(pidof slapd)/exe could not be read (Permission denied to root). It has occurred to me belatedly that this is because I'm running slapd inside a docker container (Docker version 1.2). I apologize for not being alert enough to recognize this earlier. The container is running with various capabilities (NET_ADMIN, SYS_ADMIN, SYSLOG, DAC_OVERRIDE, NET_BIND_SERVICE, SETGID, SETUID). It will not run in privileged mode -- due to (flaws in the profile for) apparmor. So /proc is a protected area (read-only for example if not in privileged mode but even more limited for security reasons). While I now understand what is causing the problem, and can edit the init.d script when building the docker image, I believe that the logic in the stop_slapd function is flawed. The slapd function is not stopping, due to a failure, but the stop function is ending with exit code 0. The fundamental flaw may well be in start-stop-daemon but this init script tests for the existence of SLAPD_PIDFILE but assumes erroneously that --exec $SLAPD is functional. I admit I don't grasp why --oknodo is not recognizing a failure (which is evident if this option is dropped) and interpreting the situation as nothing to do. I suggest that the environment I am running in will become increasingly more common and plea for a fix to be made. The scenario of concern driving the current script, i.e. an existing pidfile but daemon has died, could be tested for. If not the case then --pidfile alone should be sufficient. If the daemon has stopped then it would be OK for the stop function to exit gracefully, possibly with a warning about the pidfile. If there is no pidfile then I think the script is already exiting. One could, if the pidfile didn't stop a running daemon, attempt the --exec option. One can also try a brute force stop without using either option if both fail. Cheers Paul Bickerstaff DevOps, Portland Software Services Mobile: +6421390266 -Original Message- From: boun...@canonical.com [mailto:boun...@canonical.com] On Behalf Of Ryan Tandy Sent: Friday, 3 October 2014 8:04 a.m. To: paul.bickerst...@portland-software.com Subject: Re: [Bug 1376548] [NEW] service slapd stop fails Hi Paul, Thanks for the report. On Wed, Oct 1, 2014 at 8:03 PM, Paul Bickerstaff paul.bickerst...@portland-software.com wrote: In Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS amd64 with slapd package version 2.4.31-1+nmu2ubuntu8, OpenLDAP server (slapd), executing the following standard service command fails to have effect. Is there any output from slapd in /var/log/syslog that might indicate why it didn't stop? Is it still responding normally to connections after that? Is this happening consistently for you, or only intermittently? If the latter, can you see any pattern in when it happens? The problem is clouded by the --oknodo option in /etc/init.d/slapd. This is responsible for the erroneous report. JFTR: the intent of --oknodo is to provide idempotence, per the examples in the start-stop-daemon(8) man page. stop_slapd() { reason=`start-stop-daemon --stop --quiet --oknodo --retry TERM/10 \ --pidfile $SLAPD_PIDFILE \ --exec $SLAPD 21` } Removing --oknodo demonstrates a failure with exit code 1. The role of oknodo should be reconsidered here. Further experimentation shows that the --exec option is not working. That agrees with the return codes; 0 with --oknodo and 1 without it means that start-stop-daemon(8) thinks no action needs to be taken. However, your ps output above shows the command as /usr/sbin/slapd, which (assuming you haven't modified the init script) is exactly what --exec should be checking for. So I don't understand why this wouldn't be working for you. It definitely doesn't seem that slapd is failing to stop (which answers some of my questions above); I'd expect s-s-d to return 2 in that case. Can you verify that /proc/$(pidof slapd)/exe does point to /usr/sbin/slapd? Since the init script is checking for $SLAPD_PIDFILE and exiting if empty, I suggest just dropping --exec $SLAPD from the init script. It is superfluous and the service slapd stop command will work after its removal. As I understand it, the --exec test is there to protect against the case where the daemon has already died but the pidfile is stil present (for example, if it crashed), and some other unrelated process has already taken over the PID. My larger concern is *why* --exec isn't working properly on your system -- this could be a symptom of something more subtle. cheers, Ryan -- You received this bug notification because you are subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1376548 Title: service slapd stop fails Status in “openldap” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: In Ubuntu 14.04.1

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1377146] [NEW] shutdown menu should show icons
Public bug reported: Holding the physical power button displays the shutdown menu with options to shutdown, restart or cancel. These buttons are colour-coded but for added clarity I think we should add icons to represent the operations. Note that if this menu is changed, there are other parts of the system that also offer similar shutdown/restart menus (see bug 1377145) so ideally they would also be modified (or even better they would make use of the one true shutdown menu to avoid inconsistency). ** Affects: unity8 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: avengers -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to unity8 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1377146 Title: shutdown menu should show icons Status in “unity8” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Holding the physical power button displays the shutdown menu with options to shutdown, restart or cancel. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1377146] Re: shutdown menu should show icons
Rationale for adding icons: 1) The standard shutdown (power) icon, and the restart (circular arrow) are almost universally recognised (to the extent that you wonder if we could actually remove the text). 2) Colours only work if you can discriminate between then. Red and green are alas an unfortunate combination (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_blindness#Red.E2.80.93green_color_blindness) 3) if you inadvertently change your language to a language you don't actually understand, you have a hope of selecting the correct option if you can recognise the icon :-) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to unity8 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1377146 Title: shutdown menu should show icons Status in “unity8” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Holding the physical power button displays the shutdown menu with options to shutdown, restart or cancel. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1351423] Re: dash icon significantly different to that on other platforms
I still don't understand why the current icon: a) is hard-edged - every other icon (in fact every other widget?) has rounded corners. Is this simply to discriminate it from everything else? If so, is there any other way we can do this that is more in keeping with the softer-edged appearance of the rest of the interface? b) has a very flat profile; the other icons on the phone have seem to have very subtle (and attractive) highlights on the top edge. c) is basically so different to the stylish swirl logo we have on desktop. Should the desktop inherit the phone icon? Or should the phone inherit the desktop version? (why are they different?) Since this is arguably the most important icon on the launcher, it would be great if it had a little more presence (above and beyond that of the other icons). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to unity8 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1351423 Title: dash icon significantly different to that on other platforms Status in Ubuntu UX bugs: New Status in “unity8” package in Ubuntu: Opinion Bug description: The dash icon is shown as an orange square (with very hard straight edges btw) with the Ubuntu logo within. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1198180] Re: possible leak in upstart 1.5
The init process is certainly leaking memory. This can be observed by starting a lot of Docker containers which exit right away. I'm able to get upstart's init process to 50-100 MB of memory usage by running 5000-2 Docker containers which only print something and then exit. I've looked at the code and it seems like there may be some leaks. The upstart tests are are also leaking memory. Some of that memory is leaked in the tests themselves (allocated and never freed) and some others seem to be leaking in libnih itself. Ubuntu 14.04 doesn't seem to have this problem at all. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to upstart in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1198180 Title: possible leak in upstart 1.5 Status in “upstart” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Description:Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS Release:12.04 Package:1.5-0ubuntu7.2 Kernel: Linux XXX 3.8.0-23-generic #34~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 29 21:12:31 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux We're starting lxc containers on demand, so there's lots and lots of network interfaces going up and down. Udev emits signal, that goes to upstart-udev-bridge, and next to the upstart itself. After about 40K containers created/destroyed, upstart takes about 250MB or RAM, and it grows with every event received/send. Not only RAM is beeing used, but also init spends more time for every new event on the socket. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1367818] Re: Silent Mode causes no indication of a change in [icon] state.
I have just discussed this with James. He had transcribed three suggestions here: 1. If the minimum-volume icon had red through it all the time, it would risk being the most prominent item in the menu (at least when music wasn't playing/paused), and it would be inconsistent with System Settings (cf. bug 1376286) and with the volume OSD. If the minimum volume icon should be changed everywhere, that's an issue for the theme, not the indicator. 2. A Mute button in the indicator menu would be too similar to Silent Mode. We should, however, have a Silent Mode switch as the first item in the Sound menu. 3. Currently tapping on the icon to the left of the slider sets the volume to zero -- but pressing and holding does not. This should be fixed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to indicator-sound in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1367818 Title: Silent Mode causes no indication of a change in [icon] state. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1371636] Re: [2.24.51.20140918-1ubuntu1 regression] - /usr/bin/ld: .eh_frame_hdr refers to overlapping FDEs
It looks like the overlapping FDE error is caused by a bunch of zero address range FDEs in /usr/lib/llvm-3.5/lib/libclangCodeGen.a(CGStmtOpenMP.o). These do have the potential to cause an exception handling problem at runtime, so ld is correct to complain. (It might also be reasonable for ld to discard these FDEs.) [Touch-packages] [Bug 1198180] Re: possible leak in upstart 1.5
@uj__: The init process is certainly leaking memory. How have you proved that init is leaking memory? Can you say that PID 1 is not just still busy processing the flurry of events that would result from starting all these docker containers? Please provide further details. I've looked at the code and it seems like there may be some leaks. Where? The upstart tests are are also leaking memory. Some of that memory is leaked in the tests themselves (allocated and never freed) The tests may well leak memory as they are not designed to be long-running like upstart. and some others seem to be leaking in libnih itself. Again, where? Please provide logs. Note that libnih goes to some lengths to avoid leaks by doing automatic garbage collection. If you can produce a test program demonstrating a leak, please attach to this bug so we can investigate further. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1316873] Re: Left mouse button stops working
This bug affects me too! First started having problems in Ubuntu 12.04, left mouse button wouldn't work 90% of the time. Right clicking works fine. Tried different mice, different USB ports, same thing. Upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 and now the problem's even worse - left mouse button doesn't work at all now. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1316873 Title: Left mouse button stops working Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: This problem has plagued me for a few years across different laptops and Ubuntu versions. Current I am experiencing this on a Dell Inspiron 15z running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. It typically starts after I have used the chat or call feature in gmail, by clicking on the phone icon in the left chat margin. I am a Firefox user and have not tested this with chrome etc. It has not happened if i dont install google-talkplugin so it is quite possible that the plugin is to blame. Symptom === The left mouse button on all attached mice - USB , Trackpad and touch - will not do anything however the right mouse button continues to work. This happens to all applications and also to the desktop. The keyboard continues to function as normal. When this occurs , my solution is to Alt-F4 close all windows and log out of the X session. When I re-login the left mouse button works as normal. This is an irritant and work disruptor as I have to save all browser and desktop applications to safe state before I logout to reset the mouse. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1215660] Re: dash does not drop privileges when euid != uid, this can cause local root exploits when setuid programs use system() or popen()
There are several incorrect statements in the initial report and the linked CVE. 1. bash doesn't drop its privilege when setuid when called as sh. It only does so when called as bash and without the -p option. It does however go into a mode where it does not trust its environment as much as when it's not setuid. It still trusts $PATH though. 2. pdksh like ATT ksh or bash when called as sh, does not drop privileges on startup. It enters the privileged mode in which it is more careful in what it does with the environment (for instance, ignores ENV as mandated by POSIX). Only recent versions of mksh (and possibly OpenBSD sh/ksh) based on pdksh drop the privileges. 3. Non-Linux sh are generally not pdksh. From the major ones, only OpenBSD and MirBSD have shells *based* on pdksh. Other BSDs generally have a shell based on the Almquist shell (dash itself is mostly based on NetBSD sh) or bash (like OS/X) and commercial unices generally on ATT ksh88 4. So it's not most shells dropping privileges. bash (as sh), dash, pdksh, ATT ksh, yash don't. Only some pdksh derivatives and bash when called as sh do. 5. calling popen(/usr/bin/lsb-release) as root is not the right solution as lsb-release doesn't need super-user privileges and is not guaranteed to be found in /usr/bin and is at least on Debian a python script (python's behaviour can also be affected by env vars) that relies on PATH to find other utilities, so PATH would still need to be sanitized). So dash is not any more vulnerable that any other shell in that regard and is certainly a much better choice in terms of security for /bin/sh than any other bigger shell like bash, zsh or ATT ksh. Changing dash so it drops privileges is likely to break some usages (rare as it's widely known that calling shells in setuid contexts is very risky). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to dash in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1215660 Title: dash does not drop privileges when euid != uid, this can cause local root exploits when setuid programs use system() or popen() Status in “dash” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Poorly written setuid programs may call 'popen' or 'system' with incorrectly specified arguments. For instance, there is a bug in vmware-mount where it calls popen('lsb-release') (CVE-2013-1662). It should be popen('/usr/bin/lsb-release'). Because of this, an attacker can drop a file named 'lsb-release' in . and then call vmware-mount, and it will happily popen the attacker controlled file as root. Now, bash has a 'privdrop' option, however debian removed this option in the 1990's: http://patch-tracker.debian.org/patch/series/view/bash/4.2+dfsg-0.1/privmode.diff and http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=52586 Most shells will drop privs when euid != uid, because it turns out calling popen / system from setuid scripts is nearly impossible to get right (in fact, pretty much any setuid script is insanely difficult to write without a vulnerability in it.
