[Touch-packages] [Bug 1375979] Re: 14.10: Gtk sometimes doesn't pickup translations in the about dialog

OTOH they should be included in the new translation template, at least,
but for some reason they are not.

Title:
14.10: Gtk sometimes doesn't pickup translations in the about dialog

Status in “gtk+3.0” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
In 14.10: Gtk sometimes doesn't pickup translations in the general
about dialog. Even though all strings for the general about dialog are
translated in the gtk-packages, the general about dialog for certain
programs still only shows the English language. See attached
screenshots in zip. Tested in Swedish and Spanish translations, which
both have the gtk-packages translated. So it seems to be a general
error, and not a language-specific one.

  To reproduce:
  1) Observe in launchpad, or any other way you like, that the gtk-packages are
translated, for example, in Swedish and Spanish.
  2) Install the languages in the language support in latest 14.10
  3) Change to another language, and look in the about dialogs in, for example,
Rhytmbox and Disks - they aren't translated altough they should be. In, for
example, Gparted, they are Ok.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1377806] [NEW] 'Music Audio' category is slightly odd - should be 'Music Video'?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1377809] [NEW] Wizard sometimes crashes after entering wireless passphrase

2014-10-06 Thread Brendan Donegan
Public bug reported:

With recent images I'm finding that every so often when I run the
wizard, after entering the wireless passphrase, unity8 freezes, hangs
and then crashes before the keyboard can fully close. First the keyboard
gets stuck near the bottom of the screen, then for a minute or so the

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1363946] Re: unity8-dash crashed with SIGABRT in qt_message_fatal() under incorrect locale

2014-10-06 Thread Michi Henning
I expect the exception comes out of the bowels of the glib ini parser.
There is probably little that the scopes API can do, other than to maybe
throw a separate exception for the parsing failure. But the shell should
not try and initialize the run time without catching the exception and
handling it a bit more gracefully.

How is it possible for a non-existent locale to be set in the first
place? I would have thought that the UI should prevent that altogether?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1377427] Re: white 1 pixel line on left edge of the screen since RTM image 81

Does it fix itself by locking/unlocking the screen a few times? I think
i saw that in the past and then went away and now maybe is back.

I am not totally sure that's unity8 fault tbh.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1377817] [NEW] Search box isn't always focused when clicking on search

2014-10-06 Thread Brendan Donegan
Public bug reported:

Normally when we click on the search button in the dash, the search
field appears, is focused and the keyboard pops up. With a certain
amount of use, I am now finding that sometimes it won't appear. The

Bug description:
Currently, the clipboard is implemented such that all apps can access
the contents at any time. The clipboard contents should only be given
to apps based on user driven input (eg, a paste operation).

  Attack scenario:
  1. user launches malicious app 'baz' that polls the clipboard for contents
  2. user launches legitimate app 'foo', at which point 'baz' is backgrounded
  3. user selects some text and puts it into the clipboard
  4. user opens legitimate app 'bar' and pastes text
  5. user foregrounds 'baz' which now has access to the clipboard contents

In the above, users can understand that 'foo' and 'bar' have access to
the text put in the clipboard. However, it is unexpected that 'baz'
also has access since the user didn't paste the text into it.

As it is currently implemented, there is no clipboard timeout, so the
contents will persist through the session (unless changed by another
copy operation). Application lifecycle will help a little, but not
fully since whenever an app is foregrounded, it can the contents of
  the keyboard.

In the short term, we should require that only a foregrounded app
whould be able to get clipboard contents. Push helpers should have an
explicit deny to the (upcoming) DBus clipboard access. Background apps
should not be allowed to push content into the clipboard (application
lifecycle deals with this, but we need this for the future).

Ideally this would be handled via wholly user-driven interactions.
While this could be achieved via keyboard driven interactions, it is
difficult with toolkit driven interactions (ie, 'Paste' from a menu is
necessarily a pull operation). One idea is not to block access but
instead make users aware of the clipboard access (eg, an overlay that
says Pasted from clipboard and then fades out)-- this should be as
  unobtrusive as possible.

This appears to be a recent regression. In r1930 fingerpaint draws
very disjointed curves on the N4. Going back just 10 revisions to
r1920 however everything is beautifully smooth.

Test case (on a touch device):
    1. mir_demo_server_minimal
    2. mir_demo_client_fingerpaint -w
    3. Draw!
  Expected: Smooth curves.
  Observed: Irregular and disjointed curves.

Update: Bisected. Found the regression happened in r1924.

Most toolkits give AP the ability to calculate the coordinates of an

However Mir does not have an API to let its clients find the surface

  New feature request:

While running autopilot tests, it's impossible to tell where the
autopilot-generated touch events are being generated. We'd like mir to
draw a graphical overlay (a small blue circle perhaps) whever the
  touch events are being generated.

  Our requirements are:

  1) Must be toggleable from python.
1.1) ...Ideally wihtout having to restart unity8/mir - perhaps this could be
a unity8 setting, with a way to set that from python?
  2) Must draw a graphical overlay at the location of touch events generated
from autopilot (to test, follow https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Testing )

Please let me know if anything doesn't make sense.

[regression] Mir server uses too much CPU during touch events.

Until recently constant touch events never cause the CPU usage of my
Mir server to exceed 50%. However with the latest code it's 80-90%
  CPU.

I'm fairly sure this is caused by my recent change:

  author: Daniel van Vugt daniel.van.v...@canonical.com

  message:
Fix jerky/stuttering event delivery that could happen inside
nested servers sometimes (LP: #1372300)

Waiting significantly longer than a frame before consuming previously
batched events is too dangerous in slow raw-event environments
(nested servers or very slow input devices). It causes frame skipping.
. Fixes: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1372300.

This means cross-building doesn't work for any packages that have that
dependency added. We were told it's going to be fine due to 4.9
becoming default, but it is now, and the situation remains.

Bug description:
The package names of QML modules should be of the format qml-
module-{$modulename}[version], a transition that was started during Qt
5.3 preparation in Ubuntu. For example this could be qml-module-
qtquick-localstorage or qml-module-qtsysteminfo for non versioned
  modules, and qml-module-ubuntu-webthing0.3 for versioned/co-
  installable modules.

  Further details in Debian e-mail:
  http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-kde-
  talk/2014-March/001889.html

For Ubuntu, transitional packages should be put in place for smooth
distribution upgrades, since we're shipping with the old names in previous
Ubuntus. An example of that is at
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~kubuntu-packagers/kubuntu-packaging/qtsystems-opensource-src/revision/31
 - in other words:
  - Make the old package a transitional oldlibs package that depends on the new
package
  - Add Breaks/Replaces to the new package for the old non-transitional
packages (be careful about the version number specification)
  - Keep Multi-Arch: same and Architecture: any for the transitional package
  - Write QML module instead of QML plugin
  - Rename also the *.install files

  ---
  One more example on naming:

For example, the test (qtdeclarative5-test-plugin) in the old
qtdeclarative5-style package naming became qttest (qml-module-
qttest) in the new naming since the path is actually under
  /usr/lib/*/qt5/qml/QtTest/

The underlying problem is that the i386 and amd64 archives are out of sync at

  $ sudo apt-get install libglib2.0-0:i386 libglib2.0-0

The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
   libglib2.0-0 : Breaks: libglib2.0-0:i386 (!= 2.29.18-0ubuntu3) but
2.29.90-0ubuntu1 is to be installed

2.29.18-0ubuntu3 is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

The particular problem with glib here is transient; it will go away
whenever an up to date AMD64 package makes it into the archive.
however, in response to the first command, perhaps apt should warn
that the two packages are out of sync rather than trying to remove
  everything in sight?

Bug description:
  [Impact]

A user might find Ubuntu 12.04.5 unusable on vmware because he would
face a black screen after logging in. Although there is a workaround
(disabling 3D) a user may have given up at that point.

Backporting will help the user run the distro after upgrading, so I
  believe it's highly justified.

  [Test Case]

On VMware Workstation 10, Install Ubuntu 12.04.5, preferrably using easy
install.
Boot the VM, log in. You'll see a black screen only.

  [Regression Potential]

The bug affects a function that impots a shared buffer to the 3D
driver. The function is completely broken by the bug. Even if the
patch should introduce another type of breakage, the problem couldn't
be much worse than it already is, and should be confined to the
  specific function in question.

  [Other info]

Due to different stack ordering of automatic variables, the bug may or
may not be visible depending on the C compiler and the level of
optimization used. For example, if -O0 -g is used the bug is not
visible on 12.04.5. I have not encountered any symptoms of the bug yet
  on 14.04.

  [ Original bug report ]
Ubuntu 12.04.5 shows a black screen after login with 3D enabled on
VMware. This is due to a bug in the svga gallium driver's winsys.

It's recently fixed in mesa master commit 2d6206140a, winsys/svga: Fix
incorrect type usage in IOCTL v2, with a request to backport to mesa
stable, but I'm not sure whether anyone's still maintaining the 10.1 branch.

Due to the severity of the symptoms it would be greatly appreciated if
this fix could be incorporated in the
libgl1-mesa-dri-lts-trusty package as soon as possible.

Unfortunately it's affecting the package on the installation iso. Is
there anything that can be done about that?

  Thanks,
  Thomas

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1377854] [NEW] idle phone; polling with 85-195 ms timeouts on poll, possible unneccessary wakeups

2014-10-06 Thread Colin Ian King
Public bug reported:

While trying to figure out what's keeping the phone busy when idle
(trying to save power), I noticed that unity8 is performing a lot of
frequent poll() system calls with timeouts of 85-195 ms and it times out
on these the majority of times.Wakeups keep a phone busy, so are
these timeout polls() necessary?

On mako, with a idle phone in the period between inactivity before the
screen blanks I observe:

root@ubuntu-phablet:~# strace -p $(pidof unity8) -e poll
Process 4195 attached
poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=40, events=POLLIN}, {fd=41, events=POLLIN},
{fd=46, events=POLLIN}, {fd=61, events=POLLIN}, {fd=71, events=POLLIN}, {fd=72,

poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=40, events=POLLIN}, {fd=41, events=POLLIN},
{fd=46, events=POLLIN}, {fd=61, events=POLLIN}, {fd=71, events=POLLIN}, {fd=72,
events=POLLIN}], 7, 188) = 0 (Timeout)

So one can see the poll() in these calls is ~90-195 ms, causing ~5-6
wakeups a second which are poll timeouts. Since no other system calls
are being called, it looks like an inner loop re-polls again for another
timeout to occur again. Perhaps the timeout is too low?

Avoiding excessive wakeups does save power. In this case, it's not much,
but this is the largest cause of wakeups now on an idle phone.

So if you have problems reproducing this, just set the spanish
  language.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1368343] Re: [wizard] on the security page, there's a long delay until the keyboard appears

2014-10-06 Thread Michael Sheldon
The maliit-server is being explicitly stopped and restarted by the
welcome wizard when the language is changed (along with the indicators)
to ensure that they start with the correct environment variables (see:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~system-settings-touch/ubuntu-system-
settings/trunk/view/head:/wizard/ubuntu-system-settings-wizard-set-
lang.conf ). The delay in keyboard start-up is caused by QML compilation
of the keyboard layouts, so this should be improved when the QML caching
lands.

The only other thing I can think of that we could potentially do to
improve this would be to add some signal that the wizard could send to
the keyboard for it to change its current locale without being
restarted, this would allow the keyboard to be started slightly sooner
(on the language page) and then not restarted, I'm not sure how
necessary this will be after the caching has landed though?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1346355] Re: 14.04 power-cog does not turn red when restart is needed

2014-10-06 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
You correctly allude to the fact that when a package update requires
restart, you need to do two things: (A) install the update and (B)
restart. As long as you haven't done both, you're just as badly off (for
a security update, you're just as insecure) as if you've done neither.
Until 2009 we used panel icons for both (A) and (B). Having noticed that
that didn't work, we switched to using a dialog for (A), but still used
an indicator icon for (B). Then having realized our inconsistency, we
switched to a dialog for (B) too (the same dialog, if possible).

The Unity design principle you refer to does not exist. And even if it
did, usability testing trumps principles. Sorry.

Bug = a popup-dialog asking the user to reboot the system after an
update should not repeat (popup again) at a later time if the user
chooses not to reboot. Instead, the power-cog should turn the color
red and no further popup-dialogs should present at any time.

In ubuntu 12.04 the power-cog turned red when a reboot/restart was
needed. This was a helpful feature because it informed users that they
needed to restart the computer. But this helpful indicator is gone in
14.04 and it has resulted in me never remembering to restart my
computer because there is no helpful feedback from ubuntu that a
  restart is needed.

In 14.04, I will perform an update and a popup tells me a Restart is
needed but I usually select to restart-later because I am in the
middle of working. By the the time I am done working I have forgotten
that a restart is needed. Later when I am working again a popup occurs
informing me that a restart is needed (but again I am in the middle of
working so I don't restart). Bottom line: when the power-cog turned
red, it reminded me that I needed to restart the computer. When I
finished my work I look up and see the red power-cog and Oh yeah, I
need to restart. Now is a good time. In 14.04 this doesn't happen.
Instead I'm perpetually bugged by a popup (which is useless because
it's never a good time to restart when it pops up). The red power-cog
was a much BETTER design choice.

The removal of the power-cog turning red has negatively affected the
management of ubuntu updates and it should be fixed so that it behaves
  like 12.04.

  -- Solution --
  - Hint tab is always displayed by default
  - When interacting with the content on screen it collapses (e.g. dialler -
typing numbers, address book, clock - scrolling)
  - When user stops interacting, it reappears after 5 seconds

Created a bridge with network-manager-gnome with the bridge slave physical
device is eth0 and remove all other connections. After a reboot the bridge is
brought up, but eth0 isn't attached. When I open
/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and save it without any modification,
eth0 is instantly added to my bridge. Strange!

  Second test-case:
Created a bridge with network-manager-gnome with the bridge slave physical
device is eth0. Disable the autoconnect of the default wired network. After a
reboot the bridge is brought up, but eth0 isn't attached. Instead eth0 is
brought up and full configured.

After compiling and testing different upstream versions, i could track
the problem down to bridge_ignore_without_connections.patch. A
network-manager package without this specific patch, brings my bridge
up at boot and adds eth0 to the bridge in both test-cases.

I've checked the behaviour on my ubuntu 13.10 box with network-manager
(0.9.8.0-0ubuntu22) and the trusty version network-manager
  (0.9.8.8-0ubuntu1) .

Till now i couldn't encounter any sideeffects of removing this patch
with the bridge created by libvirt.

  Mathias Kresin

support was re-introduced (it had been initially removed when
switching to oxide). As of that version, the bookmarks list on the new
tab page displays favicons. However the favicons are not cached on
disk, all we store is a reference to their URL (e.g.
  http://assets.ubuntu.com/sites/ubuntu/latest/u/img/favicon.ico). Once
the icons have been fetched by the QML engine, they will be cached in
memory during the lifetime of the application, but if the application
is killed and restarted, the icons will be fetched from the network
again, potentially incurring a cost on the data connection.

Favicons should be cached on disk to avoid re-downloading them every
  time the app is launched.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1377869] [NEW] Set a positive value to oom_score_adj for session processes

2014-10-06 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Public bug reported:

Reference: bug 1376165

In /etc/init/lightdm.override the oom score adjustment is set to -10.
But system processes have an adjustment of 0 which means system
processes will be preferred to session process in out of memory
conditions.

The score for session processes should be much higher.

I tried the following test case:
- Take a picture with camera
- Copy it 100 times to simulate several shots with the camera.
- Then go to the Photo scope
- tap on My Pictures

With the current setting oom killer selects system dbus or powerd which
requires a hard reboot of the device.
I tried 300 (this is an example to have a significant difference with current
setting) and OOM killer selects unity8-dash (which used 44% of the memory) and
the system recovered without a reboot.

  - Take a picture with camera
  - Copy it 100 times to simulate several shots with the camera.
  - Then go to the Photo scope
  - tap on My Pictures

With the current setting oom killer selects system dbus or powerd which
requires a hard reboot of the device.
I tried 300 (this is an example to have a significant difference with current
setting) and OOM killer selects unity8-dash (which used 44% of the memory) and
the system recovered without a reboot.

  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=735428 seems to be the
relevant upstream bug, and there is a patch here:
  https://github.com/GNOME/gtk/commit/79c3ff3c4ed74bbcc820dac2d5180fa4d48d55ec

To some extent, this seems to be the result of individual projects
using GTK incorrectly, and some fixes have been made to those
  individual projects.

*However*, I am also seeing this bug occur in a closed source third
party application, Stata 13. As Emmanuele Bassi mentions in the Gnome
bug thread, there are probably a lot of applications out in the wild
affected by the same issue, that in some cases cannot be fixed, so it
would be good if a fix could be included in the versions of GTK that
  Ubuntu ships.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1328839] Re: The top panel is not restored after toggling full screen off

2014-10-06 Thread Olivier Tilloy
@Kevin: we had a workaround in place in webbrowser-app indeed, but the
bug has now been fixed in platform-api and qtubuntu, so I’ve submitted a
change in webbrowser-app to remove the workaround. With that, I guess
it’s fine if we keep the rtm14 tag.

Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Start the app

Actual:
- The splash screen shows the header in English regardless of the user's

Expected
- The splash screen shows the header in the user's language

Bug description:
The package names of QML modules should be of the format qml-
module-{$modulename}[version], a transition that was started during Qt
5.3 preparation in Ubuntu. For example this could be qml-module-
qtquick-localstorage or qml-module-qtsysteminfo for non versioned
  modules, and qml-module-ubuntu-webthing0.3 for versioned/co-
  installable modules.

  Further details in Debian e-mail:
  http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/pkg-kde-
  talk/2014-March/001889.html

For Ubuntu, transitional packages should be put in place for smooth
distribution upgrades, since we're shipping with the old names in previous
Ubuntus. An example of that is at
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~kubuntu-packagers/kubuntu-packaging/qtsystems-opensource-src/revision/31
 - in other words:
  - Make the old package a transitional oldlibs package that depends on the new
package
  - Add Breaks/Replaces to the new package for the old non-transitional
packages (be careful about the version number specification)
  - Keep Multi-Arch: same and Architecture: any for the transitional package
  - Write QML module instead of QML plugin
  - Rename also the *.install files

  ---
  One more example on naming:

For example, the test (qtdeclarative5-test-plugin) in the old
qtdeclarative5-style package naming became qttest (qml-module-
qttest) in the new naming since the path is actually under
  /usr/lib/*/qt5/qml/QtTest/

  qml-module-qtquick-xmllistmodel has path
/usr/lib/*/qt5/qml/QtQuick/XmlListModel, as an example if you have
more than one subdir. /usr/lib/*/qt5/qml/Ubuntu/Connectivity/ would be
  qml-module-ubuntu-connectivity.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1343242] Re: Departments break if going to a subdepartment of Store

2014-10-06 Thread Albert Astals Cid
According to Pawel we get

received departments:
department id=, name=All, has_children=1
subdepartments:
department id=accessories, name=Utilities, has_children=0

So yeah, no siblings since the UI is told there's no siblings.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) Open Apps.
  2) Go to Games department
  3) Click the orange 'Ubuntu store' icon at the bottom (its category title
should say Get more apps like this from the Store).
  4) You should be presented with the 'Top Games' category of the store, and
department tree has only All and Games subdepartment. It's not possible to
navigate to the root of the store from it, as UI thinks All is the current
department. Clicking Games department, and then All restores the correct
departments menu.

  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=735428 seems to be the
relevant upstream bug, and there is a patch here:
  https://github.com/GNOME/gtk/commit/79c3ff3c4ed74bbcc820dac2d5180fa4d48d55ec

To some extent, this seems to be the result of individual projects
using GTK incorrectly, and some fixes have been made to those
  individual projects.

*However*, I am also seeing this bug occur in a closed source third
party application, Stata 13. As Emmanuele Bassi mentions in the Gnome
bug thread, there are probably a lot of applications out in the wild
affected by the same issue, that in some cases cannot be fixed, so it
would be good if a fix could be included in the versions of GTK that
  Ubuntu ships.

2014-10-06 Thread Timo Jyrinki
We have another version of that patch in qtbase already, xi2-use-
master-device.patch. That should probably be replaced with the accepted
upstream approach.

I've split the 5.3.0 packaging to https://code.launchpad.net/~kubuntu-
packagers/kubuntu-packaging/qtbase-opensource-src_530. I've also ubuntu9
already being landed which I just pushed branch for to lp:~timo-jyrinki

device patch could be considered for ubuntu10 upload then.

  Desired resolution:

  - When a user deletes an app, 100% of files associated with the app
  should be deleted.

  - A warning notification should be displayed when a user goes to
delete an app informing them that this action will also delete any
data they have stored inside the app. This notification should give
the options of cancelling or proceeding with the action.

  - Users should not be allowed to delete the key apps that ship with
the phone. These key apps are defined as: Dialler, Address book,
  Messaging, Browser, Camera, Music player

The above will give the user a simple easy to understand mental model
while simultaneously protecting the user from deleting important

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1368492] Re: crash opening image file

2014-10-06 Thread Bill Filler
A side effect of this fix is that when you tap on a picture in the gallery
app to
bring it full screen, pinch-to-zoom no longer works and there is other
weirdness
(sometimes the image goes fully black). (As an aside, why is gallery even
using the thumbnailer for this?
You need the entire image for proper zooming so why not just open it
 directly?)

You are correct. Ineed the gallery-app and camera-app are both using the
thumbnail when opening the picture instead of using the picture
directly. This is being tracked in this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net
/gallery-app/+bug/1376767 and an MR already been submitted for camera-
app.

Checking the current changes added to the upstream bug I have doubts
that those actually fix the issue we have. The fix smells like it only
configures the threshold the flick should start, but doesn't configure
the velocity at all.

Bug description:
I’m implementing fullscreen mode for the browser application, and I’m
seeing two issues, which can be reliably reproduced with the following
  piece of QML:

  import QtQuick 2.0
  import QtQuick.Window 2.1
  import Ubuntu.Components 0.1
  Window {
id: window
Button {
  anchors.centerIn: parent
  text: toggle fullscreen
  onClicked: window.visibility = (window.visibility == Window.FullScreen ?
Window.AutomaticVisibility : Window.FullScreen)
}
  }

Issue #1: when toggling fullscreen on, the top panel is hidden as
expected, and consequently the coordinates of the window change on
screen, but the contents of the window are not redrawn, so in the
example above tapping the button has no effect (one needs to tap
slightly above it to activate it)

Issue #2: when toggling fullscreen off, the top panel is not restored.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1368343] Re: [wizard] on the security page, there's a long delay until the keyboard appears

2014-10-06 Thread Michael Terry
The branch https://code.launchpad.net/~mterry/ubuntu-system-settings
/wizard-refresh-take-6/+merge/235720 will help this in two ways:

1) In set-lang.conf, we not only stop maliit, but also immediately restart it.
So it has a little longer to come up before the user notices.
2) The first security page will no longer have a text field, but just something
the user clicks. This will also give the OSK longer to come up before the user
notices.

So this may become less of an issue once that lands.

On the security page of the wizard, if you select passphrase and click
on the text field, the on-screen keyboard can take up to 5 seconds to
  appear.

On krillin, it happens for me for any language. On mako, if I select
english first then the keyboard appears immediately. If I select
spanish, it's slow. If then I select english again, it's still slow.
So if you have problems reproducing this, just set the spanish
  language.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1377427] Re: white 1 pixel line on left edge of the screen since RTM image 81

Daniel, this is not really a new issue. I saw that from the first day I
booted Krillin. However, it does recover itself quite easily which is
why it gets mostly unnoticed.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1091762] Re: [, ATI R6xx HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all

2014-10-06 Thread madbiologist
Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr is based on the 3.13 kernel. The
radeon.audio=1 kernel boot option is no longer necessary with this
kernel. Instead, HDMI audio on ATI/AMD Radeon cards can be enabled and
disabled on the fly by typing the following in a terminal window:

xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set audio on

or

xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set audio off

If your HDMI port is numbered differently (type xrandr to check) - you
might need to change HDMI-0 in the above command to HDMI-1 or HDMI-2.
