  For some machines, for example, HP laptop "HP 1000" has a hot key on F4 to 
perform the shorcut "super + p" to switch video modes.
  Use command "sudo showkey -k" to capture the key code of the hot key you will 
see the key code of "super key" and "p"
  This key combination is expected to change the video mode.

  Clients can't get high resolution input in Unity8.

  Using native (non-nested) Mir servers, clients can get the full speed
  input stream if they so choose (MIR_CLIENT_INPUT_RATE=0). And it's
  planned that this will become a formal API feature: bug 1439590

  However in Unity8, because it is a nested server, the client no longer
  has the option of getting this high resolution input.

  Examples of clients that utilize high resolution input for improved visual 
quality:
 mir_demo_client_fingerpaint -w--desktop_file_hint=unity8
 mir_demo_client_target -n--desktop_file_hint=unity8
  You may also want to experiment with those using ultra-high resolution input 
by adding a kernel parameter: usbhid.mousepoll=1

  This is a tricky problem because for touch at least we do want the
  input stream to be throttled to the display rate from the top level
  down. Perhaps the answer is to enhance Unity8 to be a full-speed (non-
  resampled) client and then the clients of Unity8 can then still have a
  choice of whether they get resampling or not.

Considering also related bug 1497105 and bug 1488386, I think all three would 
benefit from us removing input resampling completely from the top-level (unity8 
process) via:
   QML_NO_TOUCH_COMPRESSION=1
   MIR_CLIENT_INPUT_RATE=0

That would immediately solve this bug, and bug 1497105, and partially
solve the keep-awake problem of bug 1488386.

The only issue then is to make sure shell elements are still responsive
in the presence of high frequency input events. Apps themselves would
not be affected because they already have their own resampling.

Bug description:
  Touch scrolling is stuttery under Unity8 (but only while you're
  touching it).

  I noticed that Unity8 is smooth in some parts and stutters in others.
  Turns out the smooth parts of Unity8 like the indicators pull-down and
  app switcher are the parts that don't have to run as clients of the
  nested server. I also noticed that those stuttering clients (like the
  dash) of the nested server only stutter while you're touching them.
  They animate smoothly if you fling them lifting your finger off, but
  stutter while they have to track your finger.

  Turns out the problem is Qt's built-in input resampling introduced in
  Qt 5.4 (commit 6dc8f47bb05a8acb3cbcc697e0dc05356a01d4cf). Turning it
  off in the unity8 process (env QML_NO_TOUCH_COMPRESSION=1) fixes the
  touch scrolling smoothness problem for clients like unity8-dash.

  I suspected this would be the case. It's possible the Qt resampling 
implementation doesn't work when nested. That would be unsurprising, having 
implemented Mir's input resampling I know that can be a problem. Although Mir's 
input resampling is designed in such a way that performance is unaffected by 
nesting. The below test case and also:
    https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-40167 (maybe unrelated)
  both suggest that the Qt input resampling introduced by Jolla is causing 
stuttering, particularly when nested in a situation where the incoming touch 
events are already throttled...

Bug description:
  Dell rebrands modems from different vendors, including Novatel, Sierra
  and Ericsson. Until now we defaulted to the Novatel plugin when a Dell
  device was found, but then we're breaking newer MBIM Sierra Dell-
  branded modems, as we don't have MBIM support in the Novatel plugin.

  So, we should try to improve the probing in the Novatel, Sierra and
  MBM plugins, so that they probe also Dell devices, and we'll then try
  to match via AT-probing which plugin should be handling the Dell

Bug description:
  From time to time, the system loses all wireles networks and kubuntu
  network manager applet goes blank - not even one network is shown. All
  wifi connections are broken. Rebooting fixes the issue, switching to
  WICD on-the-fly enables to continue browsing without rebooting, so it
  seems to be no hardware issue or iwl3945 issue.

  What to expect: stable connections and flawless network managing.
  What happens: so above.

  main component was done without showing any regressions during the

  Super+W view so that the windows can be closed from there.

  The icon defined in 'gtk_windows_set_default_icon' is not rendered on
  the Unity launcher. Instead it keeps displaying the icon as defined in
  the .desktop file.

  This is different to the behaviour of e.g. the GNOME panel and other
  launchers where the windows icon is updated. This can nicely be used
  for displaying a program's state or for drawing user's attention to
  the application if it runs iconified (with the advantage of avoiding
  any additional icons in the panel).

  I've put some effort into fixing up Xmir's -rootless mode this past
  week and it works pretty well in Mir's demo servers. However it's held
  back by Unity8 (mobile and desktop modes). Unity8 just crashes the
  moment Xmir opens a second window (like a menu even).

  I understand this arguably not being a supported feature on mobile but
  on desktop it's pretty important.

  This makes unity8 the top consumer of CPU. 1% on modern CPUs like you
  find in phones is actually a very large amount of work going on (~10
  million clock ticks spent executing instructions per second on a 1GHz
  core).

  and Ericsson. Until now we defaulted to the Novatel plugin when a Dell
  device was found, but then we're breaking newer MBIM Sierra Dell-
  branded modems, as we don't have MBIM support in the Novatel plugin.

  So, we should try to improve the probing in the Novatel, Sierra and
  MBM plugins, so that they probe also Dell devices, and we'll then try
  to match via AT-probing which plugin should be handling the Dell

Xmir (through no choice of its own) is told to destroy all resources
(destroy xmir_screen) when the last client disconnects. We could make
Xmir leak its resources (including the connection to the Mir server)...
that would also solve some annoying flickering but I'm not sure it's the

  The icons are superfluous for the task at hand (switching workspaces

  to add more focus to the task.

Found out some more. When it hangs with this message "...219", the
sddm.service is actually running, and an X-server is running, but no
other process that sddm should start (sddm-helper, kdeinit, ...).
Restarting sddm.service with systemctl doesn't help.  See this:

  I have Launcher set up to not automatically hide (because it's buggy
  and it would stop showing up too often).

  Usually, you can click on a launcher icon even on the leftmost column of 
pixels and it will respond to clicks.
  Sometimes however, randomly, if you click on the very leftmost region, i.e. 
just next to the left border of the screen, it will not respond to click; you 
then have to click a little bit more to the right, inside the rounded rectangle 
that surrounds the icon, for it to work.
  Then, after doing some random things with the mouse (switching focus between 
different windows, closing some), it behaves normally again

  Any user of lscpu on systems with multiple NUMA nodes.

  [Test case]
  On a POWER8 system:
  1) Run 'lscpu'; take note of the values for "NUMA node# CPU(s)".
  2) Run 'lscpu -p'.

  The values on the fourth column in lscpu -p output should match the
  node for which the CPU (first column) is listed (or contained in the
  displayed range). For example:

  NUMA node3 CPU(s): 13,40-79

regression would be erroneous values for node "names" or numbers, which may

  SRU (ubuntu7.4), which included changes to support discontinuous NUMA
  nodes, and introduced the code this SRU changes, so the regression
  potential is minimal (this particular feature of lscpu is already
  broken).

  As a phone user
  I'd like to have easier access to the Service numbers (incl. GSM codes) on my 
SIM card
  so that I don't have to search for them outside the usual place I look for 
phone numbers (i.e. the address book).

  At the moment we can only access the Service numbers via System
  Settings > Phone > Services (of one of the installed SIM cards). It
  would be handy to have them also in the Contacts app, e.g. via a
  special options menu.

  * Given I've just opened the Contacts (address-book-app) on my phone, when I 
press the gear icon on the right upper corner of the app then I find an option 
"Service numbers" at the end of the list of the (Contacts) Settings page.
  * Given I have 2 SIM cards installed, when I access the (Contacts) Settings 
page then I find 2 options "Service numbers ()" at the end of 
the list.
  * When I press the "Service numbers" option on the (Contacts) Settings page 
the System Settings app is opened and the Phone > Services page is displayed, 
listing the service numbers (and GSM codes) of the SIM card.

When moving to one gedit window to another with windows maximized, the

Steps to reproduce - With launcher never hiding

1) Open one gedit windows, say "text1.txt". Maximize it.
2) Open another gedit windows, say "text2.txt" maximize it.
3) Having gedit windows in 2 active, click on the gedit icon on the launcher.
Windows of gedit "text1.txt" is shown.

What should happen? Title of window on the Unity top bar should show
"test1.txt"
What actually happens? Title of window on the Unity top bar still shows
test2.txt.

I'm working in one app that have few opened windows. I go to browser
by clicking it icon in launcher. After this I click on icon of first
app, but opening not active window (I worked in another) of this app.
But if I will click close button on this window, will be closed window
in which I worked.

  After changing amount of unity workspaces to any amount not equal to
  2x2 - icon on launcher panel still shows 2x2 and moving between
  workspaces doesn't affect this icon.

  I know that there is no standard way to change amount of workspaces from 
Appearance/Behavior settings,  but users can change amount of workspaces easily 
through Unity Tweak Tool for example. 
  Obviously that this icon implemented wrong or hardcoded if it not use it's 
own settings.

  When an item is right clicked and cut or copy are selected, at the
  time of paste (using right click) the menu doesn't reflect that there
  is an item available to be pasted. While the paste is still possible,
  the menu line is grayed out.

  If another nautilus window is opened then the Paste menu item is
  correctly enabled and not greyed out.

  When nautilus is restarted and there is nothing availble to be pasted
  the menu item is greyed out and not selectable.

  This is with Precise 12.04 beta 2 using gnome-shell

  - rename the Dash app from "Scopes" to "Ubuntu"
  - use a different splash screen mode for the Dash

  phone is idle (screen on):

  This makes unity8 the top consumer of CPU. 1% on modern CPUs like you
  find in phones is actually a very large amount of work going on (~10
  million clock ticks spent executing instructions per second on a 1GHz
  core).

Title:
  Lots of thumbnail requests with invalid size

Bug description:
  When using scopes, the thumbnailer gets loads of requests with
  QSize(-1,-1) from the shell. For example, with a bunch of videos
  recorded, run up the video scope and go to "My Videos". The shell asks
  for a thumbnail at QSize(-1,-1) for the tiny thumbnail that appears to
  the left of each list entry.

  The problem with this is that the thumbnailer interprets this to mean
  "give me the largest size you can (limited to a 1920x1920 bounding
  box). That's very expensive, especially in terms of disk space,
  because that 1920 "thumbnail" ends up going into the cache, needlessly
  hogging space.

  We are about to add a qWarning message to the QML side that reports
  invalid QSize requests. For now, we are going to retain the old
  behavior, but this will turn into an error soon.

  The most effective way to use the thumbnailer is to simply ask for an
  image in the desired size, with neither width nor height of -1. The
  thumbnailer will efficiently produce a thumbnail for that. (We do lots
  of internal caching to avoid extracting or downloading a thumbnail
  unnecessarily.)

  The thumbnailer may deliver a thumbnail that is smaller than what was
  asked for (because it never up-scales) so, if asked for a thumbnail of
  size 256, it's guaranteed not to be larger, but might be smaller (if
  the original image is smaller than what was asked for).

  Could you please adjust the shell behavior to ask for specific, valid
  sizes only?

  Running a tail -f on ~/.cache/upstart/dbus.log allows you to see the
  requests as they are made. Each request shows the size that was asked
  for.

  Secondary battery fails to appear in notifier

  I'm not sure if this is a Unity bug (so please don't shoot me if I'm
  wrong)...

  I have a Lenovo T430s with the optional, secondary, Bay Battery
  installed. At times, the battery indicator will only display the
  status of one battery. Opening "Power Statistics" also displays only
  one battery. Unity is confused and thinks there is only one battery,
  and that it is actually charging when in fact the machine is
  discharging from the secondary battery. I guess this will cause the
  machine to ignore any power savings options until the bay battery runs
  out of juice and the main battery starts to drain.

  Workspace switcher doesn't snap windows

Bug description:
  I'm testing 12.04 64-bit and Unity from PPA (as requested in Call for
  testing for this weekend). When I open the workspace switcher, and
  move windows from one workspace to another, they don't snap to
  workspace edges. This makes all sorts of problems:

  1. if I want to place an application's window next to left edge of a
  workspace, it is very easy to miss the edge by a few pixels. If a
  window is placed even 1 pixel left too far, its left edge will be
  visible on another workspace. When I switch to another workspace (that
  has a 1-2 pixels of moved window), and I click on that application, I
  stay on the same workspace, instead of switching to another. Usually,
  this 1-2 pixels of a window isn't obvious, and the user might be
  confused why focus isn't switched (actually, it is, but the
  application is placed on 2 workspaces simultaneously).

  2. There is a snapping available to place window just below the top
  panel, but it isn't working always. If I try to place window jut below
  the panel, snapping sometimes work, sometimes not, but I was unable to
  see why. If it doesn't snap, its easy to place window's titlebar jus
  below top panel, which can also be confusing.

  3. it is very easy to place a window where the launcher sits. If a
  launcher isn't in autohide mode, part of the window will be covered by
  launcher and, thus, unusable until the window is moved. I think that
  launcher should also be visible in workspace switcher (or, at least,
  some indication of it), so that user could place a window on right
  position from first try.

  If a Dash search returns multiple files with the same name, there is
  no way to determine which is the one you actually wanted (short of
  opening each one in turn, or selecting "Show in Folder" from each
  Preview).

  To solve this, it should be possible to find out the full path of each
  file, or at least the name of its containing directory, without
  leaving the Dash.  Ideally this would be possible without having to
  make any additional clicks, for example the currently highlighted file
  could have its (truncated) path displayed, rather than just its
  filename.  Alternatively (or additionally) the Preview for each file
  could show its full path.

Hey Niklas.

Awesome work on this so far, you have made great progress!

I have a couple of questions/suggestions:

firstly for the created url that is sent through url-dispatcher. It
would be great if it could be and rfc 5092 [1] compliant IMAP url.
Particularly because this is the standard for referencing objects on a
remote IMAP server but it also includes some useful info like the
UIDVALIDITY which ideally a client should be checking, to be sure that
the UIDs  have not changed between the poll session and the new session
created from the dispatched url.

Also in terms of how Dekko works it would be really helpful if the
message partid was included as well, so that we would have a direct
pointer to the exact message part you created the notification from.
Which we can directly fetch and not have to parse the mime structure
again to find the interesting part.

Secondly, I read you blog post but it wasn't entirely clear to me how a
user will select the client to consume the notifications. IIRC url-
dispatcher was recently made clever and if more than one app is
registered to consume the same protocol/scheme then the user is prompted
to select which app to use. Would it make sense to just utilize that?
This is the current state for the mailto: protocol so it would make
sense to keep it consistent. What's your thoughts?

  on desktop it's pretty important.

Hey Dan,

I didn't know about that rfc yet! Let me dig into it a big more to check
if we can support that. What I can definitely say is that we can add the
message partid to the URI. If that is helpful, this shouldn't be a
problem. ;)

The application for which the notification is being displayed is the one
which the user authorizes the online account for. What I need to check
myself is whether the URI from the notification is then sent directly to
the application or if other apps can "compete" for it as well. If the
former is true, the situation is clear. If the second one is what
happens, then the new UI you mentioned should be used automatically by
the URI dispatcher. To be honest, I'd prefer the first one as in that
case the user could simply give another application access to the
account if they wanted it to receive email notifications.

The reason why I wanted to put the app id in there was to enable
applications to filter for "their" notifications in case they want to
use different email clients for different accounts (e.g. the Gmail app
for a Gmail one and Dekko for their Yahoo account). This would only be
needed in the second case outlined above though.

  (instead of skl_dmc_ver1_19.bin)

  2) downloaded the latest (skl_dmc_ver1_21.bin) and pointed the
  skl_dmc_ver1.bin symlink to it

  But neither corrected the situation.

Andy, I spotted the problem:

Line 120 in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hook-functions:

cp -a "$firmware" "$target_dir"

`cp -a` copies the symlink itself rather than the target it points to,
so we end up with a broken symlink in initramfs and no actual firmware
file.

The fix that comes to mind for me is:

  cp -aL "$firmware" "$target_dir"

But I'm not sure if that would have consequences elsewhere. Are symlinks
utilized anywhere in the initramfs?

  2) downloaded the latest (skl_dmc_ver1_21.bin) and pointed the
  skl_dmc_ver1.bin symlink to it

  But neither corrected the situation.

I also tried on a variety of qemu graphics drivers, with roughly the

I disagree with the conclusion that this script should be removed
because of the integration issues you describe.  This script fulfills a
function on the system that nothing else does, which is to ensure that
the desired governor is set for the running system.  Individual bugs
with that integration should be dealt with as bugs, nothing more.

Citing this as a difference from upstream is a non-argument.  Upstream
is defunct.

Citing this as a difference from Debian is a non-argument.  Debian is
not the relevant standard for boot experience.

The only thing I see here that needs changing per se is to migrate the
init script to a systemd unit - which would let us get rid of the
'sleep' call for instance in favor of triggering this precisely at the
end of the boot.

This is very true, unfortunately Gallery is slow compared to it's
Android counterparts, it seems to refresh thumbnails each time you open
the application and lacks folder view that would make finding pictures
easier. I used QuickPic on Android phone that was weaker than BQ Aquaris
E4.5 (dual core vs quad core) and QuickPic comfortably showed around
1000 pictures in one of the folders on my SD card, first load was slower
but not super slow, after it cached thumbnails next time it opened the
folder fast and I was able to browse through thumbnails quickly. I tried
copying the same folder to BQ and Gallery was awfully slow in showing
all those pictures, it stuttered a lot, I had to remove the copied
folder as it made Gallery almost unusable.

  This bug is a bit hard to phrase, because this is not an apples-to-
  apples comparison, except at the highest level.

  BQ report that customers are very unsatisfied with the performance of
  gallery. They are used to having a place which is a collection of
  photos on their phone.

  If they use the same hardware, and keep those photos in the equivalent
  app on android, performance is much better.

  I will attach in a comment a video demonstrating the problem

  Whilst the initial condition is not quite the same, I think the key
  usability concern is the scroll performance, and the heavy use of the
  spinner in place of an actual thumbnail.

  Obviously, there might be many reasons why 'things are slow', but it
  is a core comparison point between handsets to scroll a collection of
  the users photos, and this is a core function of gallery.

  It seems android can deliver this experience with almost no use of
  placeholders. Can Ubuntu?

Bug description:
  There's currently a trend of application developers to provide
  multiple .desktops for their apps in order to get to different parts
  of the app (for example private browsing in a web browser). One
  possible way to fulfill that need without needing multiple .desktops
  littered around would be to have popular search-based launchers also
  search through quicklist items in a .desktop. In this way, power users
  who need quick access to those other functions can have them without
  littering menus or grids with extra icons.

  It's also important to note that many apps already use Quicklist items
  this way (as that's the designed use); adding the ability to search
  them would be an improvement to everyone as it'd expose those
  quicklist items via keyboard rather than requiring users to right-
  click on the launcher item.

To reproduce launch usb creator and then and opne a terminal and run
ubuntu-bug usb-creator-gtk .  I get an error message saying that usb-
creator-gtk is not an offical package in wily.

I have usb-creator-gtk  usb-creator-gtk:

  Step to reasonably reproduce it:

  - press "super" to reset the status and reveal the launcher
  - release it
  - reveal the launcher pressing the mouse against the edge
  - move to 0x0 (top left)
  -> the launcher hide
  - move your cursor somewhere on the destkop
  - press again against the edge to try to reveal the launcher
  -> the launcher doesn't reveal

  You have to press super for instance to "reset" the state.

and the bug is still there. The system settings happily accept F1 as a
proper binding and it worked as expected.

  Unable to remap keyboard shortcut for F1

Bug description:
  I am unable to remap the F1 keyboard shortcut on Ubuntu 13.04 using
  the Unity interface.  This is what I have tried:

  System Settings -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts -> Navigation -> Switch to
  workspace 1 -> click on keyboard binding

  When I try to define a new accelerator using the 'F1' key (which on my
  keyboard happens to alos have the 'Help' function on it), it spawns
  the Ubuntu Desktop Guide and nothing gets registered as a keyboard
  mapping. I can't find a way of defining the 'F1 (help)' key as an
  accelerator.

  Any workarounds?
