[Touch-packages] [Bug 1518289] [NEW] front headphone jack recognised by alsa but ignored by pulseaudio

2015-11-20 Thread Rob
Public bug reported:

Summary:
PC has
Card: HD-Audio Generic
Chip: Realtek ALC887-VD
Ubuntu 15.10 64-bit
pulseaudio 1:6.0-0ubuntu13
- working rear audio jack connected to speakers - volume controlled from
Settings>Sound>Sound Output tab.
- nonworking front headphone jack - no corresponding output device in
Settings>Sound>Sound Output tab. (not affected by whether or not headphones
are connected at boot time)
However front headphone jack is visible (muted) in alsamixer, and volume can be
unmuted and raised in current session - returns to muted on reboot.

Detail:
This desktop PC was previously running trusty with front headphone jack working
normally - if audio on rear jack there was audio in headphones. I do not
remember now whether the audio volume was separately controlled as a second
output device, either would have worked fine for me.
Fresh install of wily on a new disk resulted in working rear audio jack, but
non-working front headphone jack.
The ubuntu Settings>Sound Output tab shows only one device for sound output:
"Line Out - Built-in Audio".

My expectation is that the volume level of the headphone jack should
initially be set to a non-zero level.

After exploring various options, I discovered that the front headphone
jack is visible in alsamixer but displayed as level 0 and muted. It can
be made to work in the current session by unmuting and setting to a non-
zero level.

Adjusting volume and balance in the ubuntu Settings>Sound Output tab
affects the audio output levels to the headphone jack in the way one
might expect, but when the settings are changed while alsamixer is open
(eg left right balance), the vertical bars for the headphone level do
not move as they do for all other output jacks. But when the surround
sound profile is changed in the Settings>Sound Output tab, both actual
headphone volume and headphone volume bars in alsamixer drop to 0 with
muting.

In any event, on reboot the jack is muted again and needs to be reset in
alsamixer.

Following online advice, I unsuccessfully tried various ways to make the
unmuted settings survive a reboot - eg running alsamixer under sudo,
alsactl store.

Eventually I looked at the contents of the /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
file and realised that the unmuted state was properly set in the file
and was unchanged on reboot.

The muting was being caused by pulseaudio.

I was able to verify this by unmuting in alsamixer and restarting
pulseaudio without rebooting - the output was muted again.

Perhaps somebody could run:

  strace -f -o click.trace -s 1024 click

... and attach the resulting click.trace file to this bug? It might be
possible to work out the problem from that.

  DESCRIPTION:
I've been trying to track down the cause of the occasional UI freezes on my
Krillin device, and I noticed that whenever the UI freezes for 2-4 seconds, I
get a burst of "PropertiesChanged" signals in dbus-monitor

  Here's a log of what's shown in dbus-monitor:
  http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/11992322/

I'd guess the problem is in the code that actually catches the signals
  and acts accordingly.

  HOW TO REPRODUCE:
  1) Move to a place where many wifi hotspots are available
  2) Connect the device via USB and run "phablet-shell" and then "dbus-monitor"
  3) Use the device while keeping an eye on dbus-monitor output

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1434396] Re: Xserver does not start or freezes with systemd + lightdm

2015-11-20 Thread LGB [Gábor Lénárt]
Meanwhile, I've upgraded to 15.10. Now the system _mostly_ works, but
let's say about every 5th boot the system freezes with black screen if
systemd is used. Upstart always work. Interestingly in most cases
systemd works as well, but not always. I cannot find any reason about
this always changing behaviour if I try to boot multiple times.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1518130] [NEW] libpng is installed by default

2015-11-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Ubuntu server cloud images include libpng by default. This is
unnecessary and poor practice. It wastes space and poses a security
risk.

Looks like it is installed because "ubuntu-standard" recommends
"plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text" which depends on "libplymouth2" which
depends on "libpng12-0".

The description for "plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text" is "graphical boot
animation and logger - ubuntu-logo theme". This is obviously
inappropriate for any server image, and especially for a cloud-based
server image.

** Affects: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Some PAM modules produce output of more than 1 line (e.g.
PAM_TEXT_INFO may contain newlines in the message content). Polkit
authentication agent is prepared to receive only single-line messages
so it treats each line as a separate message. It fails to recognize
the type of message for all of them except the first - hence failed
authorization even if it was successful on the PAM-level.

   * The PAM specification does not require the modules to send only
single-line messages. Thus, polkit needs to be fixed.

  * The helper component should escape (g_strescape) all messages before
sending it up to the authentication agent. This way everything will be
read as a single line and then unescaped to restore it's formatting
with no changes required in PAM modules.

  [Test Case]

   * Use a pam module that returns a multi-line PAM_TEXT_INFO message on
successful authentication (may require to artificially modify a pam
  module).

   * Perform a polkit authorization with e.g. pkexec ls

   * Correct authorization should end with a failure with an
  unrecognized PAM message

  [Regression Potential]

   * Fix makes advantage of the fact that polkit authentication agent
already un-escapess (g_strcompress) all input from the helper
  component.

  * Fix is a backport of an upstream change.

  [Other Info]

   * Original bug description:

There is an error observed when Ubuntu is configured to perform
authentication via pam_vas (Vintela Authentication Services by Dell)
in a disconnected mode (using cached authentication).

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Configure pam_vas client authenticating to a remote server.
  2. Perform authentication to cache the credentials.
  3. Disconnect from the network where the server is reachable (to force using
cached information).
  4. Perform an action requiring polkit authentication.

  Expected result:
Authentication succeeds accompanied by the following message "You have logged
in using cached account information. Some network services will be
unavailable".

  Actual result:
Authentication fails accompanied by the following message "You have logged in
using cached account information. Some network services will be unavailable".

  Probable cause:
The PolkitAgentSession part of polkit is designed to interpret only 1-line
output, while interaction with pam_vas in the above scenario triggers helper to
produce the following 2-line output:
PAM_TEXT_INFO You have logged in using cached account information. Some
network services
  will be unavailable.

The 'will be unavailable.' part is interpreted as an unknown message
  and causes failed authorization.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1518106] Re: Using "$ source export_modules_dir.sh" causes the error "bash: /bin/build_paths.inc: No such file or directory"

2015-11-20 Thread Victor Thompson
Sourcing in the "export_modules_dir.sh" script causes $0 to be "bash" in
gnome-terminal and "/bin/bash" in terminator. When executing the script
$0 is ./export_modules_dir.sh as one would expect.

Since the script is being sourced in I don't think it dirname should be
used.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1517873] Re: CR: indicator bar on top of the phone should show hotspot connections

2015-11-20 Thread Dominik
The thing with the blue bar is that it takes up screen space - ios
compensates for this by squishing all the icons closer together.

While I am all for having an indicator of how many clients are connected
(possibly with more details about them in the hotspot options), wouldn't
a number on the icon that appears on the top bar right now when the
hotspot is active suffice?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1510824] Re: PolkitAgentSession incorrectly handles multiline output (as observed with pam_vas)

2015-11-20 Thread Dariusz Gadomski

+
+ * justification for backporting the fix to the stable release.
+
+ * In addition, it is helpful, but not required, to include an
+explanation of how the upload fixes this bug.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * Use a pam module that returns a multi-line PAM_TEXT_INFO message on
+ successful authentication (may require to artificially modify a pam
+ module).
+
+ * Perform a polkit authorization with e.g. pkexec ls
+
+ * Correct authorization should end with a failure with an unrecognized
+ PAM message
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * Fix makes advantage of the fact that polkit authentication agent
+ already un-escapess (g_strcompress) all input from the helper component.

+ [Other Info]
+
+ * Original bug description:

There is an error observed when Ubuntu is configured to perform
authentication via pam_vas (Vintela Authentication Services by Dell) in
a disconnected mode (using cached authentication).

The 'will be unavailable.' part is interpreted as an unknown message and
  causes failed authorization.

  unrecognized PAM message

  [Regression Potential]

   * Fix makes advantage of the fact that polkit authentication agent
already un-escapess (g_strcompress) all input from the helper
  component.

  * Fix is a backport of an upstream change.

  [Other Info]

   * Original bug description:

Re: [Touch-packages] [Bug 1517102] Re: Gmail webapp account renewal not successful

2015-11-20 Thread David Barth
What I observed with a set of old tokens is that our own (canonical.com)
token renewal process gets ejected into the browser. The redirects are part
of the SAML / 3rd party auth. process, but not all of it is trapped
unfortunately.
Eventually, after restarting the webapp 3 times to finalize the process,
the tokens get refreshed and the Gmail webapp redirects to the main UI, but
there are at least 2 redirects that end up in the browser.

Here is what I found in the logs :

qml: Opening: https://login.ubuntu.com/two_factor_auth?next=/saml/process
in the
 browser window.
...
and later
...
qml: Opening: https://login.ubuntu.com/saml/process in the browser window.

I also spotted a few:
process 23654: arguments to dbus_connection_close() were incorrect,
assertion "c
onnection->generation == _dbus_current_generation" failed in file
../../dbus/dbu
s-connection.c line 2935.

if that matters.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1512211] Re: Charging from USB battery, phone stops charging, switches on screen, and discharges

2015-11-20 Thread Andrea Bernabei
UX fix committed. I will add unity8 package so that the engineers from
that team can give more details about what is implemented and what is
not (and when it will be).

** Description changed:

When I was travelling recently I found that if I plugged into a USB
battery overnight to charge my phone, when I got up the next morning the
phone didn't have any more power than when I started.

Turns out the reason is: when the phone decides the battery is full, it
stops drawing current. The battery then decides that charging is over
and automatically switches off. The phone then decides that it's been
unplugged and turns the screen on. I had set the phone to not
automatically switch the screen off, so it just left the screen on all
night. The next morning it was as if it had never charged.

So I have the following suggestions:

- * Just don't turn the screen on when the user unplugs the charger
- * If the intention is to let the user know that the charger has been
unplugged, pop up a message. Just turning the screen on isn't very useful
feedback.
- * If you are turning the screen on automatically it "doesn't count" wrt the
user's "automatically turn off screen after..." setting. This should always be
just a few seconds.
- * If the user has configured the phone to not automatically switch off the
screen, don't automatically turn it on either
- * Give me a few more options for automatically switching off the screen - 1,
2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 is a lot of resolution at the low end. Where is 30mins and
1hour?
+ 1) Just don't turn the screen on when the user unplugs the charger
+ 2) If the intention is to let the user know that the charger has been

2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 is a lot of resolution at the low end. Where is 30mins and

P.S. this has nothing to do with webbrowser-app but I still can't figure
out how to search launchpad for Ubuntu touch packages.

+
+ ===UX comment===
+ I will try to address all the points raised in the bug description.
+
+ 1) is invalid, we should turn on the screen when the user unplugs
+ the charger and possibly show a message reminding the user to unplug
+ the charger from the wall socket (if any).
+

already specified as one of the usecases of the new notifications system UX
(which hasn't been implemented yet).

blanking policy, that means it is on the plan to implement it (if it's not
already)
+

(private link)
+
+ 4) is taken care of by implementing 3)
+
+ Point 5) is valid but requires a new bug which should also specify the
usecases when those longer values would be needed, so that UX designers can
better understand the needs and the reasons behind a UX suggestion :)
+ Matthew, could you please file that bug? :)
+
+ Point 6) (the one presented in comment #1) is valid but requires a new bug,
mentioning the usecases, just like 5). I have to say I am not really into that
feature, because the screen backlight of devices like the Meizu MX4 probably
consumes more power than a USB port provides (which is usually 500mA). So it
needs special care and convincing usecases :)
+ Matthew, could you please file that bug, specifying some usecases when this
feature would be really handy? :) I can't promise we will implement it, but we
can discuss it ;)

+ UX Solution:
+ We should get rid of the text 'pull to refresh and release to refresh'.
Mobile users should now be accustomed to the affordance of pulling and
releasing to refresh. Instead we should use an indeterminate indicator to
provide feedback to the user when they have pulled to refresh (such as the one
in the UITK spec:
https://docs.google.com/document/edit?hgd=1=1nFm8xiYhKXXuEO_IvMXoD0lASbYzYXva1BWMVanU3iw#heading=h.37zlmvphdoig)

+
+ This functionality will be added to the UITK document for the pull to
+ refresh component.

Bug description:
PullToRefreshStyle has two text options: "Pull to refresh" and
"Release to refresh". It tries to animate between them, using an
opacity fade in/out. But unfortunately, the text itself changes
immediately before the fade out. So it looks very unsightly.

Maybe some code like the following, that I've used as a workaround in
unity8. Note the PropertyAction between the two NumberAnimations.

2015-11-20 Thread Andrew Hayzen
After further investigation it is specifically the "dirname $0" that is
causing the issue, and appears to be related to the terminal I'm using.
As if I run gnome-terminal this works as expected but with terminator it
doesn't.

gnome-terminal
$ dirname $0
.

terminator
$ dirname $0
/bin

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1518262] Re: Screen does not turn off

Do you mean that the screen doesn't turn off automatically after two
minutes of inactivity?

Do you have any apps open (either active or in the background)? If so,
please try closing the apps and see if that resolves the problem.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1435040] Re: Ubuntu Phone (BQ E4.5) does not connect to car-bluetooth

2015-11-20 Thread gwena56
With OTA 8, this morning

1 - My two computers (Ubuntu 14.04 and Mac OS X 10.10.5) connect to my BQ 4.5
for 2 seconds and drop the connection. Ubuntu to Ubuntu it's a joke ?
2 -With my first audio headset, at the end of several minutes of listening or
if I receive a phone call, the sound cuts itself and I have to reboot the phone
3- With the second audio headset, the sound is of very bad quality, jerky.

I used these devices bluetooh with an iPhone 5 with no problem at all
and I used even audio files to make my tests.

build_paths.inc does not exist until you run 'qmake'. Did you do that?

Also exporting the modules dir before running 'make' to compile the
plugin is useless, so you need to do that as wel.

  1) Branch lp:ubuntu-ui-toolkit and cd into the directory
  2) Run the command $ source export_modules_dir.sh
  3) Observe the error "bash: /bin/build_paths.inc: No such file or directory"

At step 3) for the modules to be correctly exported.

Note that the workaround I currently perform is running the following set of
commands (the only difference from the script is ". `dirname

  $ . build_paths.inc

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1516443] Re: Wishlist: (RedShift) Night mode for Ubuntu Phones

2015-11-20 Thread Andrea Bernabei
I tried redshift on desktop, and I have to say it really made the
difference at night time.

I think it would be nice to have it on the phone as well, though I'm
quite sure this requires works from the Mir team (I think redshift
heavily depends on X), which is currently really busy improving Mir
itself.

I'd be interested in this too. But, note there are legal implications. I
believe in some countries it is against the law to disable the sound.
So, this option would need to be hidden in certain countries, or atleast
include a warning reminding the user to check the law in their country
or similar. Probably best if Canonical's lawyers can advise on this
before anything is implemented.

Title:
  Update ofono.override plugin excludes ( -P ) for bluez5

Status in Canonical System Image:
  Fix Committed
Status in lxc-android-config package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in lxc-android-config package in Ubuntu RTM:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
The ofono upstart override file includes an updated exec line for
ofono with a different set of plugins excluded vs. the upstart job
shipped as part of the ofono package.

The '-P' argument is a comma-separated list of plugins to exclude at
startup. ofono internally uses g_pattern_match_simple to process
this list, which means the patterns are glob-style, and support the
wildcard '*' and '?' characters per

  https://developer.gnome.org/glib/2.28/glib-Glob-style-pattern-
  matching.html

The upstart job shipped in the archive's ofono package specifies a
single plugin to exclude, 'ril', which is the device plugin used on
touch devices only. Note, this job should also probably exclude the
'rildev' plugin as well. As such, we probably should change the
upstart job to specify "-P ril*".

The current excludes list in the overlay PPA is:

  -P stktest,provision,sap,udev,dun,smart,hfp

'stktest' can be removed as it's only included in the builtin_modules
list if ofono is built with MAINTAINER_MODE defined.

'dun' can be removed as there's no plugin with that name. Note, for
bluez5, we've added "dun_gw_bluez5" to the list. We should just
combine the two and specify "dun*".

'sap' ( SIM Access Profile ) can be removed when we land bluez5, as
it's only defined if ofono is built against bluez4.

'smart' isn't doing anything by itself, as the plugin is really named
  "smart_messaging".

'udev' only prevents the original udev plugin from loading, it doesn't
prevent udevng from being loaded. This should probably be changed to
"udev*" to prevent problems on a device where a collision might occur
between the udev plugins and the rildev plugin.

So, the recommended command line once we land bluez5 should be:

  exec ofonod -P provision,udev*,dun*,smart*,hfp_bluez5

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1375637] Re: Premature end of data in tag file line 247651 with libxml2

2015-11-20 Thread Quanah Gibson-Mount
Hi Sebastien,

The problem is I've found no consistent trigger for the bug. I have 225
packages in my repository, built out for two different branches and two
oses (so 225x4). createrepo just randomly corrupts when executing
'createrepo --update .' when adding a new source/binary rpm pair. It is
trivially solvable (rm -rf repodata .repodata; createrepo .), but having
to briefly have a 100% repo outage is the problem.

I've not seen anything specific about the packages that would cause this
to occur. It seems to be some type of race condition during the update
process, because of it complaining about " I/O error : No such file or
directory".

Problem fixes by installing libxml2=2.9.1+dfsg1 from debian sid.
Comparing patchsets in debian package sources between 2.9.1+dfsg1 and

of them helps in my problem:

Hmm, still no luck with reproducing, just tried with OTA-8 image and
#184, using your pictures you attached.
